Lands & Resources Consultant, Project Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Develop and nurture client relationships by comprehensively understanding their needs, priorities, and objectives while delivering outstanding client service.

• Act as a liaison between Indigenous community clients, regulators, proponents, Band Managers, legal advisors, and economic development corporations.

• Oversee projects concerning lands and resources, planning, environmental management, capacity building and training, as well as community engagement.

• Manage notifications, consultation, and engagement requests for client lands offices.

• Monitor incoming requests, maintain databases, respond to proponents and government entities, coordinate internal teams and technical expertise, and communicate with relevant stakeholders.

• Assist the Lands Director with recommendations for the lands office, engagement strategies, and strategic communications.

• Attend meetings with client representatives, legal advisors, consultants, proponents, and government officials.

• Prepare and manage funding applications, assist clients in achieving project deliverables, and compile funder reports.

• Draft reports, strategic communications, and memos supporting community objectives of clients.

• Engage in business development and sales initiatives.

• Travel frequently to Western Canada.

⛳️ Requirements

• A degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Planning, Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.

• A minimum of 4+ years of professional experience as a Project Manager on lands and resources, environmental, economic development, and/or regulatory projects, or as a Lands Manager or Lands Coordinator working with Indigenous communities.

• Familiarity with regulatory processes, environmental best practices, and the potential impacts and mitigation strategies of development projects such as pipelines, energy, mining, waste, and major infrastructure.

• Experience in delivering training sessions, facilitating workshops, and engaging communities.

• Skills and experience in cross-cultural environments, preferably with First Nation, Métis, and/or Inuit communities.

• Capability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.

• Strong technical writing and analytical abilities.

• Proficient in data management and analysis.

• Experience in preparing technical reports.

• Ability to convey complex issues in accessible language through written, verbal, and presentation formats for diverse audiences.

• Working knowledge of land management issues and legislation affecting First Nations at both local and federal levels, including the Indian Act and Regulations, Land Registry, Land Titles Act, Impact Assessment Act, Duty to Consult, precedents, and court rulings impacting Indian Reserve Lands.

• Frequent travel to Western Canada is required.

• Asset: experience with Indigenous law and governance, UNDRIP, FPIC, and shared decision-making.

• Asset: understanding of data and communication security and confidentiality.

• Asset: experience in training for environmental monitoring or impact assessment.

• Asset: experience with communication and consultation programs, Traditional Knowledge, land use and occupancy, GIS, community economic development, conflict resolution, negotiations, capacity building/training, technical reviews, and multimedia storytelling.
