This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take ownership of and expand Chainguard's global intellectual property portfolio.
• Spearhead IP enforcement initiatives, including cease-and-desist measures against customers or competitors breaching licensing agreements.
• Act as a primary legal advisor for open source licensing inquiries from the engineering team.
• Provide guidance to product teams regarding licensing, intellectual property, and terms of service factors during concurrent product and feature launches.
• Prepare and evaluate product terms and terms of service for new product introductions.
• Offer counsel on licensing aspects within partner and joint development agreements.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams early in the development phase to pinpoint and address legal considerations prior to launch.
• Develop scalable intellectual property processes, templates, and resources as the function expands.
• A minimum of 5 years of legal experience with a solid background in intellectual property law, including trademark and copyright.
• Experience with patents is advantageous.
• Comprehensive understanding of open source licensing, encompassing permissive, copyleft, and non-standard licenses.
• Experience in advising on product launches, product roadmaps, product terms, or terms of service is beneficial but not mandatory.
• Strong intellectual property experience may compensate for less extensive product counsel experience.
• Ability to work proactively to develop and safeguard company intellectual property while also responding effectively when enforcement actions are necessary.
• This is an individual contributor position with potential for growth into a leadership role over time.
