This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.
• Supervise ThinkWell’s global finance and accounting operations while offering strategic financial guidance to the leadership team.
• Report directly to the CEO and actively engage in the firm’s corporate management team.
• Manage a bookkeeper and work in collaboration with the Director of Operations and global managers.
• Create and enforce accounting protocols, policies, systems, and processes.
• Ensure accounting operations are compliant with GAAP and US Government regulations.
• Guarantee the timely and precise execution of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, invoicing, and related functions.
• Establish internal controls for revenue recognition, invoicing, transaction documentation, expenditures, and resource protection.
• Oversee in-country accounting and compliance processes across various geographies, providing training, guidance, and expert advice.
• Conduct multi-entity consolidation and allocate costs adhering to donor requirements.
• Lead the preparation for internal and external audits, managing auditor interactions, fieldwork, and negotiations.
• Ensure timely and accurate tax and statutory submissions across different regions.
• Review the reasonableness, allowability, and allocability of country office and global expenses.
• Evaluate monthly transactions and generate monthly financial statements for leadership review.
• Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting in conjunction with the Managing Director of Global Business Operations.
• Monitor adherence to organizational policies, US Government regulations, client terms and conditions, and applicable local laws.
• Assess and reconcile indirect cost and fringe rate calculations; lead the development of indirect cost rate proposals.
• Oversee internal and external financial reporting.
• Analyze the financial position and communicate risks, opportunities, and recommended adjustments to leadership.
• Direct the organizational budgeting process, develop budget templates, and track expenditures.
• Formulate pricing and cost recovery strategies.
• Review proposal budgets for quality, compliance, and cost recovery in collaboration with program teams and the Design Lab.
• Provide support for organizational risk management, compliance, and strategic financial and accounting advice.
• BA/BS with 15+ years of relevant experience or a graduate degree with 12+ years of relevant experience.
• Active CPA certification is mandatory.
• Proven financial and accounting leadership experience overseeing large, complex projects in the international development sector.
• Familiarity with intercompany reconciliation, subsidiary consolidation, managing foreign exchange gains/losses, and other intricate international accounting challenges.
• Excellent communication skills with experience engaging senior internal and external stakeholders.
• Capability to advocate for the organization’s interests during budget and contract negotiations.
• Ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences and summarize critical information for decision-makers.
• Comprehensive knowledge of US Government regulations, including 2 CFR 200, FAR, and AIDAR.
• Preferred experience with other public and private funders and agencies, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, FCDO, and UN agencies.
• Previous experience in developing corporate budgets, templates, and indirect cost rate proposals.
• Advanced Excel skills and a strong understanding of the relationship between proposal budgets, internal project budgeting, funder deliverables, and invoicing.
• Extensive team and people management skills, including the ability to grow, mentor, and coach staff at various levels of experience and seniority.
• Senior leadership capability to inspire staff around ThinkWell’s mission and priorities.
• Ability to engage effectively with external strategic partners, donors, and stakeholders.
• Proficiency in English; fluency in a second language is advantageous.
