This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.
• Monitor and analyze forecasts and information on hydrometeorological threats such as hurricanes, cyclones, droughts, floods, and tsunamis to deliver technical guidance and real-time analysis of imminent and potential hydrometeorological hazard events.
• Offer technical recommendations to assist USG disaster response planning for international hydrometeorological hazard events, including floods, droughts, tsunamis, hurricanes, cyclones, El Nino, and other meteorological, hydrological, and oceanic threats.
• Participate on USG disaster response and assessment teams to provide real-time hydrometeorological data and forecasts in support of USG disaster response operations as necessary.
• Evaluate project proposals, concept papers, and other documents related to hydrometeorological hazards. Supply technical advice, assessments, evaluations, and guidance to DHR projects and implementors in collaboration with other technical staff. Prepare background documents, briefing notes, and other pertinent materials as required.
• When appropriate, integrate new advancements in hydrometeorology into DHR programming and endorse the development of strategies aimed at mitigating the impacts of hydrometeorological hazards and enhancing disaster and emergency preparedness.
• Maintain a travel-ready status and, when required, serve on Disaster Response Teams (DART) and Washington-based Response Management Teams (RMTs), which provide services and support to DARTs deployed in disaster responses. The responsibilities on RMTs may vary. DARTs may necessitate immediate (within 24 hours) deployment overseas for extended durations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Master’s degree and a minimum of 7 years of professional experience, OR Bachelor’s degree with at least 9 years of professional experience.
• Educational background must include substantial study in specialized fields relevant to meteorology, hydrology/civil engineering, hydrometeorology, or atmospheric science.
• Professional experience must encompass progressively responsible roles in hydrometeorological early warning as it pertains to disaster response and preparedness.
• Must possess two (2) years of operational experience (either domestic or overseas) in meteorology or hydrology.
• U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government-issued Secret clearance for the entirety of employment are mandatory.
• May need to obtain a U.S. Department of State medical clearance for the duration of employment under this contract.
• Demonstrate excellent judgment and reliability;
• Exhibit strong organizational abilities and exceptional attention to detail;
• Possess outstanding oral and written communication skills;
• Have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
• Capable of multitasking and working under deadlines in a fast-paced and collaborative setting;
• Able to prioritize tasks and follow up on actions independently;
• Be flexible and adaptable to changing situations;
• Willing to serve on response teams as necessary;
• Be prepared to function as an active team member who supports other team members; and
• Be willing to work extended hours to aid in disaster preparedness and response as required.
