Head of Engineering, POS Application Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical strategy and architecture for the POS Application Platform, serving as the domain CTO for all operations conducted on our POS devices.

• Develop and oversee the four primary platform pillars throughout the organization: developer experience (tools, libraries, SDKs), platform reliability (observability, uptime, quality standards), foundational frameworks (architecture, coding standards, testing and release pipelines), and squad adoption (promoting the use of platform tools among all embedded POS engineers).

• Establish and uphold engineering standards across various POS device types and OEM manufacturers, ensuring architectural consistency and quality across a diverse device fleet.

• Lead POS engineers integrated within Payments, Onboarding, VAS, Savings, and Loans squads — setting high standards for engineering quality and providing the platform layer that supports all teams.

• Manage POS observability comprehensively: monitoring, alerting, and incident response frameworks that guarantee platform health across all devices and squads.

• Drive the architectural approach for how Moniepoint accommodates multiple POS device types, including establishing processes for onboarding, governance, and integration with the platform for new devices.

• Collaborate with OEM partners and the POS hardware team upon the introduction of new device types, ensuring the application layer is prepared to support them from the outset.

• Engage in writing and reviewing code directly — this role anticipates 40 to 60 percent of hands-on engineering involvement. You will set the technical benchmarks, not just the technical path.

• Build and scale the POS platform team, which includes hiring, mentoring, and structuring for growth as the platform expands internationally.

• Convert platform decisions into business outcomes by closely collaborating with Product, Payments, and Business leadership across various markets.

• Establish and consistently enhance engineering processes, tooling standards, CI/CD pipelines, and metrics for developer productivity within the POS engineering community.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 10 years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a minimum of 6 years leading engineering teams through significant growth phases, preferably in multinational or large VC-backed firms.

• Direct, hands-on experience in developing software for Point-of-Sale terminal devices, meaning engineering at the device level — the application layer — rather than server-side integrations with POS systems. This is a mandatory requirement, and candidates lacking this experience will not be considered.

• Strong understanding of EMV standards (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) and experience with payment certification processes such as PCI DSS and P2PE. Candidates without this background will not be considered.

• Extensive Android engineering proficiency in Kotlin and Java. The POS application layer at Moniepoint is Android-based, and there are no exceptions to this requirement.

• Proven experience in building internal engineering platforms, shared libraries, developer tools, or foundational frameworks utilized by other engineering teams — not exclusively consumer-facing feature products.

• Experience in governing or architecting across various POS device types from different hardware manufacturers, with a grasp of how OEM integrations and device management function at scale.

• A history of hands-on technical leadership at a significant frequency — we expect a 40 to 60 percent coding ratio in your current or most recent role. If you have transitioned into a purely managerial position with no direct code contributions, this role may not be suitable.

• Experience in developing or enhancing platform engineering functions, including establishing engineering processes, tooling strategies, and governance frameworks across squads.

• Demonstrated capability to scale engineering teams and construct the organizational framework beneath you — leaders who can grow into and evolve around the position you are hiring for.

• Experience at a company handling high volumes of financial transactions within a regulated environment. A fintech background is strongly preferred.

• Familiarity with terminal management systems and device observability tools is a significant advantage.

• Backend engineering experience in Java or Spring Boot is a strong plus, given the platform's breadth and the integration surface it encompasses.

• Experience working directly with OEM vendors on hardware specifications and integration is an added bonus.

• Exposure to C or C++ is a plus — one of our device variants utilizes C.

• Experience solely at Series A or B stage startups is unlikely to demonstrate the scale and complexity required for this role.
