Head of Engineering, POS Application Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical strategy and architecture for the POS Application Platform, serving as the domain CTO for all operations on our POS devices.

• Establish and manage the four essential platform pillars throughout the organization: developer experience (tools, libraries, SDKs), platform reliability (observability, uptime, quality standards), foundational frameworks (architecture, coding standards, testing and release pipelines), and squad adoption (promoting the use of platform tools among all embedded POS engineers).

• Define and uphold engineering standards across all POS device types and OEM manufacturers, ensuring architectural uniformity and quality across a diverse fleet of devices.

• Functionally lead POS engineers embedded within Payments, Onboarding, VAS, Savings, and Loans squads — setting high standards for engineering quality and providing the platform layer for all teams.

• Oversee end-to-end POS observability: monitoring, alerting, and incident response frameworks that guarantee platform health across all devices and squads.

• Drive the architecture for Moniepoint’s support of various POS device types, including defining the onboarding, governance, and integration processes for new devices with the platform.

• Collaborate with OEM partners and the POS hardware team when introducing new device types, ensuring that the application layer is prepared to support them from day one.

• Engage in writing and reviewing code directly — this position anticipates 40 to 60 percent hands-on engineering involvement. You will set the technical benchmarks, not just the technical direction.

• Build and expand the POS platform team, encompassing hiring, mentoring, and structuring for growth as the platform evolves internationally.

• Translate platform decisions into business impacts, working closely with Product, Payments, and Business leadership across various markets.

• Establish and continuously enhance engineering processes, tooling standards, CI/CD pipelines, and metrics for developer productivity within the POS engineering community.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 10 years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a minimum of 6 years leading engineering teams through significant growth phases, preferably in multinational or large VC-backed organizations.

• Direct, hands-on experience in developing software that operates on Point-of-Sale terminal devices. This includes engineering on the device itself — the application layer — rather than server-side integrations with POS systems. This is a strict requirement and candidates lacking this experience will not be considered.

• Strong understanding of EMV standards (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) and experience with payment certification processes such as PCI DSS and P2PE. Candidates without this expertise will not be considered.

• Extensive Android engineering proficiency in Kotlin and Java. The POS application layer at Moniepoint is based on Android, and this requirement is non-negotiable.

• Proven experience in developing internal engineering platforms, shared libraries, developer tools, or foundational frameworks utilized by other engineering teams — not just consumer-facing feature products.

• Experience in governance or architecture across various POS device types from different hardware manufacturers, along with an understanding of OEM integrations and device management at scale.

• A demonstrated history of hands-on technical leadership with a coding ratio of 40 to 60 percent in your current or most recent role is expected. If you have transitioned into a fully managerial position without direct code contributions, this role may not be suitable for you.

• Experience in building or advancing platform engineering functions, including establishing engineering processes, tooling strategies, and cross-squad governance structures.

• Proven ability to scale engineering teams and develop the organizational framework beneath you — leaders who can grow into and adapt around the role you are hiring for.

• Background in a company that processes high volumes of financial transactions within a regulated environment. Fintech experience is highly preferred.

• Familiarity with terminal management systems and device observability tools is a significant advantage.

• Backend engineering experience in Java or Spring Boot is a strong plus due to the platform's breadth and the integration surface it operates on.

• Experience working directly with OEM vendors on hardware specifications and integration is a bonus.

• Exposure to C or C++ is advantageous — one of our device variants utilizes C.

• Experience at Series A or B stage startups alone is unlikely to demonstrate the scale and complexity needed for this position.
