This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +2 more states.
• Take charge of the development of Whatnot's consumer research and trend report program, overseeing everything from conceptualization and methodology to media-ready packaging and launch.
• Utilize AI tools, platform data, seller behaviors, and buyer trends to uncover insights that are newsworthy, culturally significant, and defining for the category.
• Collaborate closely with data, product, and category teams to uncover stories hidden in the numbers and transform them into engaging narrative assets.
• Establish a rhythm of trend moments – seasonal, cultural, and category-specific – that keep Whatnot prominent in media discussions throughout the year.
• Develop and manage a recurring content franchise (such as a blog, newsletter, or similar) that provides original analysis on categories, seller economics, and the live commerce sector.
• Create story angles that are rooted in data and appeal to both media and consumers.
• Spot opportunities to integrate Whatnot into wider cultural and industry conversations with data-supported points of view.
• Produce press materials including pitch angles, backgrounders, and talking points based on research and insights.
• Act as an on-the-record spokesperson for Whatnot on consumer trends, category topics, and live shopping culture, effectively representing the brand with the press, on camera, and at events.
• Convert platform data and buyer/seller insights into sharp, quotable narratives that establish Whatnot as the leading voice on current trends and future developments.
• Build and sustain credibility with journalists as a reliable expert source on consumer behavior, live commerce, and the communities that engage with Whatnot.
• 7-10+ years of experience in PR, communications, economics, or journalism, with a proven record in communications and data storytelling.
• Proven experience in developing and launching data-driven reports, trend studies, or research-backed earned media initiatives.
• Strong analytical instincts: comfortable working with data sets and translating findings into narratives that appeal to both the press and consumers. You understand the elements of a compelling story and can identify newsworthy insights within data.
• Passion for AI tools in research, data analysis, and daily operations. While you're not expected to be an expert, you are curious and eager to improve.
• Experience engaging with media and editorial. Established media relationships across consumer, lifestyle, and tech outlets, including both traditional and new media, are a significant advantage.
• Outstanding writing skills: capable of transforming a data point into a headline and a trend into a narrative. Ability to articulate data into clear, culturally relevant stories that resonate with a wide audience.
• Experience in fast-paced, high-growth environments such as tech, marketplace, entertainment, or creator-driven companies.
