Front End Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Lead the technical direction and architecture for Tailscale’s next-generation web console.

• Develop frontend infrastructure and platform capabilities to create a cohesive console experience.

• Create identity-related frontend systems, such as authentication, session management, secure cross-origin integrations, and multi-service product surfaces.

• Establish application structure, routing, state boundaries, shared abstractions, and practices for maintainability.

• Design and oversee cross-origin authentication and session infrastructure, covering auth flows, CORS, CSRF protections, cookies, sessions, and deployment environments.

• Construct and manage a frontend serving platform that hosts multiple Tailscale products.

• Set up shared infrastructure, conventions, and design patterns.

• Develop tools and abstractions that empower non-frontend engineers to create accessible, production-quality user interfaces.

• Collaborate with Product Design to deliver intuitive user experiences.

• Work alongside Growth, Design, Product, and engineering teams on experimentation, analytics, A/B testing, and feature rollouts.

• Formulate the frontend testing strategy, including integration testing, end-to-end coverage, developer ergonomics, and testing abstractions.

• Enhance local development workflows, build pipelines, preview deployments, release ergonomics, and operational reliability.

• Offer technical leadership, conduct reviews, provide mentoring, and establish platform guardrails.

• Participate in the on-call rotation to assess and resolve incidents.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in building and managing production React applications at scale.

• Profound understanding of HTTP semantics, browser security boundaries, authentication flows, cookies, storage, CORS, and CSRF.

• Experience in creating internal platforms, frameworks, or shared libraries.

• Proven ability to drive a unified console or platform vision across diverse frontend codebases.

• Strong judgment in frontend architecture.

• Experience in designing scalable frontend testing strategies.

• Ability to collaborate across design, growth, infrastructure, and developer tooling teams.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• High level of ownership and autonomy expected.

• Required to participate in an on-call rotation.

• Nice to have: experience in AI-assisted frontend development, design systems, component libraries, feature flagging, analytics, experimentation, progressive delivery, identity, admin, B2B SaaS, or security-sensitive product surfaces.
