Forward Application Engineer, IoT & AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Contribute to the development of one of the pioneering multinational drone early-warning systems aimed at safeguarding the European Union.

• Activate and deploy the devices linked to the next-generation AI system in real-world scenarios.

• Collaborate within a 35-member team of sensor, IoT, and hardware engineers to successfully launch intricate products on-site at client locations.

• Engage in travel for durations of up to six weeks at a time.

• Validate, test, and resolve issues with hardware and software in operational settings under live conditions and unpredictable circumstances.

• Grasp complex customer needs and requirements.

• Spearhead technical pre-sales discussions.

• Create smaller, tailored system modifications to ensure products fit seamlessly into clients' unique ecosystems.

• Oversee system performance, address incidents, and drive continuous improvements in observability.

⛳️ Requirements

• Citizenship of an EU member state is mandatory due to security regulations associated with this role.

• You must be officially registered as a resident in an EU country.

• A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in IT, such as hardware or software engineering; ideally, between 10 to 20 years.

• At least 4 years of experience as a Field Application Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Forward Deployed Engineer, or Deployment Architect within an IoT context.

• Proficient in embedded Linux across various architectures, with extensive knowledge of low-level Linux network configurations, including routing, iptables, and socket programming.

• Possess expert-level debugging and troubleshooting abilities.

• Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing.

• Advanced skills in programming languages such as C/C++, Rust, Go, Python, or TypeScript.

• Fluent in English; knowledge of additional spoken languages is advantageous.

• Demonstrated interest in the defense sector.

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup or scale-up environment.

• Willingness to travel 50% within the EU, especially to NATO’s eastern borders.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with sensor and tracking standards such as ASTERIX, MAVLink, Cursor on Target (CoT), and STANAG 4609/KLV.

• Nice to have: Experience with logic analyzers like Saleae and oscilloscopes for analyzing hardware interfaces, including UART, SPI, I2C, and CAN bus.

• Nice to have: Knowledge of Docker and container orchestration tools such as K3s/Kubernetes for rugged edge-computing platforms in field conditions.

• Nice to have: Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).

• Nice to have: Understanding of network protocols like TCP/IP and UDP, along with experience using Wireshark, TShark, or Scapy.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with disassemblers and decompilers, such as Ghidra or IDA Pro, for extracting and analyzing firmware.

• Nice to have: Knowledge of radio frequency (RF) technology and experience with software-defined radios like HackRF or USRP, along with GNU Radio for signal and jamming simulations.
