Financial Controller

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants anywhere in the world.

šŸ“‹ Description

• Take ownership of the monthly closing process and ensure the timely dissemination of accurate management accounts to FP&A according to the established schedule. This deadline is ingrained in our culture and is consistently met each month. The initial phase involves setting up a reliable cadence and data-quality standards; as systems, controls, and team capabilities develop, the process is expected to become more efficient.

• Ensure the integrity and quality of the financial records, including accruals, reconciliations, journal entries, and intercompany transactions, to a standard that instills confidence in their use by FP&A, executives, and investors.

• Define and maintain the data-quality standards in collaboration with Crypto Operations, ensuring that on-chain transaction records are complete, reconciled, and ready for entry into the financial books, with feedback mechanisms established for any discrepancies. The integrity of the financial records cannot be guaranteed if poor data is allowed to enter downstream.

• Manage the statutory accounts and local filings for each of the group’s subsidiary entities across various jurisdictions; collaborate with local accounting firms when beneficial, expanding the network to enhance efficiency and quality.

• Confidently account for complex financial instruments and digital asset positions, including options, FX hedges, DeFi positions, and native token operations, while applying the necessary IFRS / US GAAP treatments. Utilize Cryptio and any external technical accounting advice effectively.

• Own the financial controls framework, including segregation of duties, control owners, and periodic reviews, while instilling discipline and structure within the function.

• Lead, mentor, and develop a small accounting team, with the capacity and intention to grow. Be hands-on enough to resolve issues personally, while the team manages the routine tasks as the scale increases.

• Promote the integration of AI and modern automation within Finance operations, in collaboration with internal technical resources, progressively alleviating low-level tasks from the team to enable higher-value activities. The pace will be adjusted to match the function's capacity for change.

• Position the function to be verifiably ready for investor diligence by year-end and maintain this readiness as the business evolves.

• Collaborate with FP&A (who are responsible for management commentary, variance analysis, and dashboards), Treasury/Crypto Operations (who provide the on-chain transaction records), and external service providers (local accountants, payroll providers) to ensure seamless function operations.

ā›³ļø Requirements

• A recognized senior accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or an international equivalent), coupled with substantial post-qualification experience in the industry—specifically in financial services, trading, banking, hedge funds, or a similarly fast-paced in-house Finance setting. You proactively tackle problems and guide them to resolution on your initiative.

• Hands-on experience in group controllership across multiple entities and jurisdictions. You have directly closed and produced statutory accounts for various subsidiary entities, managed intercompany transactions, and effectively utilized relationships with external advisors (local accountants, payroll providers, etc.) to enhance throughput.

• Proficient in accounting for complex financial instruments—options, FX hedges, derivatives, structured positions, fair-value versus cost considerations, and mark-to-market evaluations. While crypto-specific accounting experience is advantageous, fluency with these instruments and the judgment to manage incoming transactions effectively is essential.

• A leader who also operates at a hands-on level. You will personally close the books some months, file statutory accounts directly, and occasionally draft technical accounting memos. At the same time, you will lead a team that handles most of the workload regularly and will uphold your high standards.

• A direct and accountable communicator. You address problems early with proposed solutions, take responsibility for any issues that arise, and ensure the quality of outputs from your function.

• A strong preference for structure, automation, and a forward-thinking perspective on the future of Finance. You design controls and closing routines that function autonomously, recognizing AI and modern automation as the default trajectory for the function—identifying opportunities, championing initiatives, and effectively collaborating with technical resources who develop the necessary tools. While you don’t need to create these tools yourself, you don’t wait for others to implement them either.
