This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
• Install, activate, test, and provision SONET, WDM, and Ethernet devices in an optical fiber network, following the engineered design.
• Perform splicing for new installations and restorations on various cable types (Loose Tube, Ribbon, Micro, OPGW, etc.).
• Engage in splicing activities on cables that include both dark fiber and lit services.
• Execute and verify all testing of network equipment to ensure compliance with Zayo Fiber procedures and the specifications of equipment manufacturers.
• Collaborate with the Network Operations Center to finalize acceptance testing for all newly installed equipment and rings.
• Conduct tests to validate all provisioning, alarm monitoring to the NMS (Network Management System), and network switch protection, among others.
• Utilize Fiber Optic, SONET, Ethernet, and SDH-related test equipment, including OTDR, PMD, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, BER Test Sets, and Sniffers.
• Conduct site surveys of remote locations to guarantee quality installation of racks, equipment power plants, fiber cables, etc.
• Report any defects to the Operations Manager and/or OSP Project Engineer.
• Label and tag all equipment and cabling in accordance with Network Engineering Diagrams.
• Carry out advanced analysis and troubleshooting of issues while assisting the NOC/customer.
• Participate in an on-call rotation schedule for nights and weekends.
• Fulfill additional duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned.
• Execute both hardware and software updates or modifications to remote site equipment as required.
• Maintain hard copy and/or electronic records of completed work on various assignments, including splice diagrams, patch panels, and test results.
• Interface with customers and carriers to support service delivery and assurance.
• Work independently for extended periods.
• Respond to customer troubles on a 24-hour basis.
• Collaborate closely with the NOC, Sales, Engineering, and customers.
• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience is preferred.
• A valid Driver’s license is required.
• Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in the Telecom industry, focusing on splicing, installation, maintenance, and repair of network and/or Outside Plant.
• At least two (2) years of field or military experience in wireless telephony, SMR, paging, or broadcast industries is required.
• Prior experience with base station equipment, NMS, equipment installation and maintenance, low-power broadcast equipment, and familiarity with both construction and maintenance phases is preferred.
• Experience using a Volt/Ohm meter, RF power meter, frequency sweep equipment, spectrum analyzer, fault locating equipment, and battery conductance meters is preferred.
