This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• You are enthusiastic about taking responsibility for comprehending and advocating for the investments and decisions made by your team (including challenging, redirecting, and providing support across functions), while showcasing a clear understanding of our organizational objectives and how the work you lead is the most valuable investment to achieve them within your area of ownership.
• Directly manage and mentor the Messaging and Applications teams (comprising engineers, a team lead, and QA across both teams), delivering consistent, constructive feedback and conducting performance evaluations to promote professional growth.
• You recognize the distinction between good and exceptional performance and know how to elicit this from your team members, including understanding when to challenge, redirect, and manage up or out.
• You understand when and how to advocate for new team members or essential skillsets that would enable the department to achieve greater results.
• Actively engage in the recruitment, interviewing, and retention of top-tier engineering talent, collaborating with other people managers to enhance team engagement and foster a positive company culture.
• Promote the adoption of modern, AI-assisted engineering practices across both teams by assessing new tools, establishing responsible-use guidelines (particularly regarding PHI), and continuously elevating standards for productivity and quality.
• Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to refine and implement the technical strategy for a reliable, compliant, and scalable core product.
• Oversee shared ownership and coordination between the two teams, considering that they operate within the same core web application and codebase.
• Stay closely involved with the solutions, and when necessary, take a hands-on approach: communicating through prototypes or example applications, assisting in overcoming obstacles, and reviewing technical work.
• Keep updated on emerging technologies and industry trends, advocating for best practices within the department; review and collaborate with engineers on technical specifications to ensure excellence in execution.
• Work in close collaboration with Product and Design to conceptualize and define impactful solutions, often through Product Requirements Documents (PRDs).
• Expertly lead and facilitate team rituals such as Kickoffs, Retrospectives, and Tech Debt Reviews, and work cross-functionally to understand estimates and prioritize the backlog, making practical trade-offs.
• Develop processes, tools, and systems that improve the overall effectiveness of the department.
• Contribute to the team by participating in the On-Call (PagerDuty) rotation.
• Proven Track Record: A minimum of 5 years of successful experience as an Engineering Manager overseeing product/application engineering in two or more early-to-growth-stage remote startup environments.
• Strategic Leadership: A demonstrated ability to lead and drive the delivery of long-term technical projects across multiple teams, achieving measurable outcomes.
• Technical Proficiency: Strong technical knowledge with a deep understanding of building and operating customer-facing web applications (web frameworks, relational databases, APIs, cloud infrastructure).
• Modern & AI-Assisted Engineering: A history of adopting modern development practices and utilizing AI-assisted tools (e.g., AI coding assistants and LLM-based workflows) to enhance engineering velocity and quality, with the discernment to apply them responsibly in a healthcare/PHI context. You actively coach your teams to integrate these tools into their daily work.
• Hands-on Experience: The capability to engage with the codebase when necessary. (This is primarily a management role; however, you should be able to assist in debugging issues, reviewing technical work, and facilitating team unblockage.)
• Collaborative Expertise: Exceptional skills in collaboration and influence, effectively working across departments to create optimal solutions while navigating multiple constraints.
• Situational Awareness: The ability to determine when to dive into technical details and when to maintain a higher-level perspective while collaborating with Engineers, Product, and Design.
