Engineering Manager, Merchants

Posted Jul 21

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Oversee and expand engineering leadership for the Merchants Core and Merchants Growth teams.

• Conduct one-on-one meetings, establish objectives, offer feedback, and nurture your team’s development.

• Take charge of hiring for your teams — identify, interview, and secure top engineering talent.

• Cultivate a culture centered on ownership, technical excellence, and open communication.

• Make architectural decisions regarding billing, invoicing, checkout, dashboards, and the delivery promise engine.

• Draft and evaluate RFCs for complex features — set standards for engineering decision-making.

• Assess both AI-generated and human-written code with the same level of scrutiny — you are familiar with every line that is deployed.

• Propel the advancement of Burq's merchant experience into a comprehensive enterprise delivery platform.

• Manage sprint health, ensure backlog quality, and maintain delivery predictability across both teams.

• Guarantee that KTLO (Keep the Lights On) responsibilities — like billing reliability, notification systems, and account management — are prioritized and not overshadowed by feature demands.

• Collaborate closely with the Merchants PM and designer to convert product strategy into engineering roadmaps.

• Maintain a distinct separation between Core (reliability, billing, KTLO) and Growth (product, promise engine, features).

• Work directly with the Head of Engineering on organizational structure, hiring strategies, and technical direction.

• Partner with Customer Success to address merchant operational challenges — Core is the team closest to these issues.

• Collaborate with the Data team on financial reconciliation and analytics infrastructure.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience, with at least 2 years in managing engineering teams.

• Proven history of managing multiple teams or a team of teams effectively.

• Architect-level technical expertise — capable of making and owning difficult decisions related to billing systems, API design, and product infrastructure.

• Proficiency in Node.js/TypeScript, PostgreSQL, AWS, and Stripe (or similar payment systems).

• Comfortable working in a high-growth startup environment — adaptable to changing priorities while maintaining progress.

• Player-coach mentality — you lead by example and are willing to get involved when your team requires it.

• Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

🏝️ Benefits

• Competitive compensation, stock options, and performance-related bonuses.

• Fully remote work environment.

• Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental insurance.
