Engineering Manager, Maps & Search

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead and develop the Maps & Search team by overseeing hiring, onboarding, coaching, conducting 1:1s, providing direct feedback, and supporting career advancement. Approach management as a craft and foster a healthy, high-performing team that delivers impactful changes.

• Remain actively involved in technical contributions — including code and design reviews, architecture discussions, and complex debugging — while maintaining enough technical knowledge to make informed decisions on trade-offs.

• Take ownership of and expand a high-throughput search platform. Drive the architecture, relevance, latency, and reliability of a real estate search system that processes approximately 1 billion monthly requests and manages hundreds of millions of listings.

• Create a top-tier home search experience. Manage the core home discovery process across web and mobile platforms, enhancing engagement, lead conversion, and agent workflows while ensuring that interactions are fast and responsive at scale.

• Advance AI-driven discovery initiatives. Collaborate with various teams to integrate large language models (LLMs) and intelligent ranking into search and user workflows, improving how buyers and agents discover, filter, and interact with listings.

• Influence the roadmap alongside product and design teams. Define what we build and the rationale behind it, focusing not only on the how but also translating user needs and business objectives into a clear technical plan, while taking full responsibility for delivery — including planning, quality, reliability, and incident response.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including significant time at senior or staff levels, alongside at least 2 years of experience managing engineering teams.

• Experience in search technologies — you have worked with search, relevance, ranking, or retrieval systems. While it doesn't need to be OpenSearch or Elasticsearch specifically, you possess a solid understanding of how search operates and ways to enhance it.

• Extensive expertise in TypeScript, Node.js, and React, with full-stack proficiency to navigate the entire request path from UI to data.

• Background in designing and maintaining scalable microservice architectures within cloud-native environments (AWS is preferred).

• Strong comprehension of GraphQL, event-driven systems (Kafka), and databases (PostgreSQL, OpenSearch).

• A demonstrated history of managing high-traffic, low-latency production systems at scale — concepts like SLOs, incident response, and capacity planning are second nature to you.

• Proven experience leading impactful initiatives from conception to production in a SaaS environment.
