Engineering Manager, Data Foundations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Recruit, oversee, and empower a high-achieving Data Insights Platform engineering team, fostering an environment where team members can excel and produce exceptional results.

• Collaborate closely with product managers, product designers, and fellow engineering managers to outline and execute the roadmap for the Data Insights Platform (DIP) and associated Platform Insights initiatives.

• Take ownership of your team's delivery, encompassing planning, prioritization, execution, and operational follow-through across architectural tasks, platform enhancements, and production readiness.

• Direct the technical design of distributed data-path components, including ingestion, buffering, enrichment, exporting, and querying.

• Assist the team in creating safe and scalable integrations with the GitLab monolith.

• Uphold a high standard for security, privacy, and governance regarding how platform data is managed.

• Enhance operational maturity across the platform, including observability, metrics, logging, readiness, capacity planning, performance monitoring, and comprehensive runbooks for managed environments.

• Collaborate asynchronously across teams and functions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience managing platform, infrastructure, or data systems teams at scale, with a history of cultivating high-performing, values-driven teams.

• Extensive expertise in distributed systems, demonstrating sound judgment on service boundaries, asynchronous pipelines, backpressure, fault tolerance, horizontal scalability, and operating multi-component systems in production environments.

• Strong technical foundation in backend and platform engineering, with the capacity to guide architecture for high-throughput event pipelines and data systems.

• Familiarity with technologies and patterns pertinent to this field, such as change data capture, event streaming or messaging systems, OLAP data stores, query-serving layers, and service-to-service APIs.

• Capability to recruit, nurture, and mentor team members while also providing technical guidance on intricate architecture and delivery trade-offs.

• Excellent cross-functional collaboration abilities, particularly when ownership is shared between platform teams and feature teams utilizing common infrastructure or APIs.

• Experience in building or managing systems across various deployment models, with a keen judgment regarding the trade-offs between GitLab.com, Dedicated, self-managed, and cell-based environments.

• Strong written communication skills and the ability to operate effectively in a remote, asynchronous setting.

• Familiarity with search, indexing, and query-serving systems is a significant advantage.

• A profound passion for reliability, customer outcomes, and engineering and operational excellence, with a demonstrated history of instilling these values in high-performing teams.
