Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Guide, mentor, and nurture a team of engineers through processes such as recruiting, hiring, regular one-on-one meetings, feedback, career growth, and performance management.

• Take ownership of daily engineering operations, which include planning, prioritization, technical execution, release coordination, and resolving obstacles.

• Provide hands-on technical guidance through architecture discussions, code reviews, troubleshooting, and contributions to production-level code.

• Spearhead technical design and architectural decisions for the team's services, collaborating with engineering leadership on broader platform strategies and cross-system initiatives.

• Convert business and product requirements into actionable technical plans, ensuring a balance between roadmap delivery, technical debt, and operational priorities.

• Supervise the design and upkeep of services, applications, APIs, database schemas, and integrations.

• Lead intricate initiatives across multiple applications and services, coordinating dependencies with Product, Operations, QA, Design, and various other teams.

• Enhance system reliability, performance, security, observability, and maintainability.

• Oversee technical incident responses, root cause analyses, and continuous enhancements to system reliability.

• Establish and refine engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, documentation, code quality, and release processes.

• Utilize AI-assisted development tools to boost engineering productivity, code quality, testing, and development workflows, while promoting responsible adoption within the team.

• Set clear engineering objectives and utilize delivery, quality, and reliability metrics to promote ongoing improvement.

• Cultivate technical ownership within the team, balancing hands-on engagement with effective delegation and mentorship.

• Clearly communicate engineering progress, technical decisions, risks, and operational issues to stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• Over 6 years of professional software engineering experience, with a robust background in backend development, system design, and production applications.

• More than 2 years of engineering management experience, encompassing direct people management, mentoring, and performance evaluations.

• Proficient in Python, Go, or similar backend programming languages.

• Experience in designing RESTful APIs using frameworks like FastAPI or Gin.

• Familiarity with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including schema design and query optimization.

• Proven experience in designing, building, and maintaining highly available, reliable, and scalable services.

• Strong technical judgment and hands-on experience in software development, including contributions to production code and resolving technical challenges.

• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, capable of articulating technical decisions, trade-offs, and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Experience in managing engineering delivery, technical priorities, and inter-team dependencies.

• Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies, including Scrum, Kanban, or similar frameworks.

• Demonstrated experience with AI-assisted software development tools, ensuring appropriate validation and security practices are followed.

• Experience with automated testing, Continuous Integration, Git, and contemporary development workflows.

• Experience in supporting production systems, troubleshooting complex issues, and leading incident responses.

• Proven experience in leading and collaborating with geographically distributed engineering teams.
