Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Manages the entire people management lifecycle for direct reports, including 1:1 meetings, performance evaluations, career advancement, hiring, terminations, and compensation decisions.

• Oversees multiple engineering teams, taking responsibility for both personnel and delivery outcomes across various scopes.

• Ensures that teams achieve their KPIs and are adequately staffed to fulfill their commitments.

• Cultivates the growth of Tech Leads in their roles, fostering their development in design ownership, technical mentorship, and accountability for delivery.

• Directs active project management for feature development by defining scope with Product partners, scheduling deliveries, identifying dependencies and complexities, managing timelines, and reallocating resources as needed to uphold commitments.

• Serves as the project management interface for engineering, coordinating with Product Managers to align on deadlines and priorities, highlighting risks early, and proactively addressing scheduling conflicts.

• Holds Tech Leads accountable for delivery commitments and design completion, reviews estimates, and engages with project designs, plans, and scope definitions to pinpoint execution and schedule risks.

• Shares partial accountability for burn charts, ensuring they accurately reflect project health, although not solely responsible for them.

• Guarantees that deployment plans are established prior to every feature release.

• Identifies technical and scheduling risks across projects and collaborates with Tech Leads on mitigation strategies before issues escalate.

• Works closely with Product Management to grasp priorities, clearly outline features, and negotiate trade-offs between scope, time, and resources.

• Collaborates with Tech Leads to ensure execution aligns with processes and standards; addresses any execution gaps through coaching, resourcing, or process intervention.

• Drives initiatives for process improvement to enhance team efficiency, delivery predictability, and engineering quality.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of professional experience in software engineering, with a solid foundation as a hands-on technical contributor earlier in your career.

• More than 3 years of experience in an engineering management role, with direct accountability for project delivery and people management.

• Proven track record in managing and developing engineering talent, including conducting performance reviews, hiring, and making compensation decisions.

• Demonstrated experience in taking full ownership of project management for software feature development, including full accountability for schedule, scope, processes, and outcomes.

• Adequate technical depth to assess risks in designs and plans, validate technical estimates, and collaborate credibly with Tech Leads. While not needing to be the deepest technical expert, you should be technically proficient enough to ask insightful questions and recognize inconsistencies in answers.

• Strong history of partnering with Product Management to define features, align on priorities, and manage trade-offs effectively.

• Capability to proactively identify and manage technical and scheduling risks, developing mitigation strategies before problems arise.

• Comprehensive understanding of software delivery processes, standards, and deployment practices.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is required, or equivalent industry experience.
