This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Oregon.
• Oversee the daily operations and effectiveness of the engineering team across Java, Platform, SysOps, UI, QA, and Product.
• Take charge of people management, which includes conducting one-on-ones, coaching, performance evaluations, development planning, recognition, hiring, onboarding, succession planning, and handling disciplinary actions.
• Convert company and product priorities into well-defined team expectations, operational rhythms, and accountable execution.
• Enhance engineering quality by implementing quality gates for specifications, technical design, documentation, code reviews, testing, and release readiness.
• Assess technical work to identify quality, process, or architectural issues prior to downstream defects.
• Balance the speed of delivery, quality, technical debt, and operational risk.
• Manage engineering planning, ensure status visibility, escalate risks, and follow through on actions.
• Define decision rights and responsibilities within the matrixed organization.
• Collaborate with Product, Customer Success, Revenue, Security, Finance, and external technology partners.
• Maintain ownership of engineering process and policy documentation across the engineering organization.
• Address cross-team conflicts and promote shared accountability.
• Collaborate with the Founder & CTO and senior engineers on architecture, scalability, reliability, security, and modernizing practices.
• Participate through targeted reviews, technical discovery, incident support, or limited coding when necessary.
• Encourage responsible adoption of AI-driven and specification-led engineering practices.
• Extensive software engineering experience, including technical leadership in a commercial SaaS or enterprise software setting.
• Proven track record of directly managing engineers, including goal setting, coaching, performance evaluations, providing tough feedback, and facilitating performance improvement.
• Strong understanding of modern software delivery practices, including code reviews, testing, release management, and operational reliability.
• Technical credibility in software and/or SaaS applications, with the ability to engage effectively with UI, QA, cloud, and product stakeholders.
• Experience leading distributed or remote teams and creating accountability without the need for constant supervision.
• A history of conflict resolution, timely decision-making, and clear communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Familiarity with AWS-hosted products, scaling established platforms, modernization initiatives, or vendor-supported engineering programs.
• Experience in digital asset management, content platforms, metadata-rich systems, or related enterprise technologies.
• Knowledge of AI-assisted development, specification-driven development, information security, and privacy requirements.
• Experience in a smaller organization where leaders must navigate comfortably between strategy, management, and selective hands-on execution.
