Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• In the role of Engineering Manager at Buoy Software, you will guide a fully-distributed team of 6-8 engineers in creating high-quality software that supports critical operations within the blood collection sector. Collaborating with product managers who provide project specifications, you are responsible for overseeing the software delivery from requirement gathering to its performance in Production.

• You perceive your team as your primary product. With the technical expertise to assist engineers in making informed decisions, your focus is on ensuring the team's well-being, attracting top talent, and preparing the team for successful delivery. You work closely with product managers and your team's technical leads, coordinate with engineering leadership (including your VP of Engineering and fellow EMs) on strategies and priorities, and connect your team with the larger business context and organizational goals, all while promoting collaboration, ownership, and ongoing improvement.

• Most importantly, you are a proactive problem solver who takes initiative instead of waiting for guidance.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 4 years in software engineering, which includes at least 2 years in a leadership or mentoring capacity.

• Demonstrated success in managing engineering teams and delivering influential, high-quality products.

• Comprehensive knowledge of software development practices, particularly in web application development. Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, AWS, and modern CI/CD pipelines is advantageous.

• Strong foundation in system design, architecture, and engineering best practices, with established credibility in code reviews and technical mentorship.

• Experience with Agile methodologies and project management tools.

• Proficient use of AI development tools (such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Claude Code), with the discernment to know when to rely on AI output and when to intervene. You have enough experience reviewing AI-generated code to identify its shortcomings.

• A commitment to people development, rooted in empathy and effective communication.

• Robust conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.

• Capability to balance the needs of the team with business objectives.
