Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee a team of backend engineers focusing on Core Services, which include the ledger, decision-making systems, schedules, rules engine, HRIS integrations, authentication, and directory management.

• Report directly to the Vice President of Engineering and collaborate with a fellow Engineering Manager on Core Services leadership.

• Take responsibility for people management, team performance, and outcomes.

• Initially manage a team of around 4–6 engineers, with opportunities to expand the team as the company scales.

• Conduct growth-oriented one-on-one meetings, set clear expectations, provide constructive feedback, and participate in hiring, onboarding, and leveling engineers.

• Mentor project leads and facilitate project kickoffs, technical methodologies, progress updates, and releases.

• Convert company priorities into organized plans while clearly outlining scope and timeline trade-offs.

• Safeguard operational capacity for production health, incident response, and correctness initiatives.

• Conduct design reviews and advocate for systems that are simple, accurate, and observable.

• Contribute code, prototypes, and assist with production debugging when necessary, then take a step back.

• Ensure invariants for idempotency, auditability, reconciliation, and safe retries are maintained.

• Collaborate with Client Apps, Platform, Customer Engineering, Product, and Operations teams.

• Document decisions, identify risks early on, and support empowered project teams.

• Utilize AI extensively in coding, debugging, design, planning, writing, analysis, preparation for one-on-ones, hiring, and communication.

• Participate in company-wide onsite events three times per year.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in software engineering.

• At least 2 years of experience leading teams of approximately 3–8 engineers (or equivalent scope).

• Extensive software engineering experience with Python/Django or similar backend systems.

• Proven ability to lead design reviews, uphold engineering standards, and prototype using Python/Django or a comparable backend stack.

• Experience with systems where correctness and reliability are paramount.

• Background in mentoring engineers through one-on-ones and establishing growth objectives aligned with a leveling matrix.

• Demonstrated experience in addressing performance issues directly and participating in hiring processes.

• A successful track record of delivering on commitments, clarifying ambiguity, and managing a robust Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

• Significant personal involvement with AI for coding, debugging, planning, writing, and team operations.

• Capability to review and take ownership of AI-assisted outputs.

• Familiarity with Python, Django, Django Rest Framework, PostgreSQL, AWS, and Docker.

• Must be U.S.-based and able to address inquiries related to U.S. employment visa sponsorship.
