
Engineer in Training II – Substation Protection & Control

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Execute and coordinate the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations (12 kV to 500 kV) with minimal supervision.
• Support and gradually assume responsibility for crucial design deliverables, which include: one-line diagrams and protection schematics, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams, panel layouts and interconnection diagrams, as well as protection and control design criteria and philosophies.
• Prepare and review various engineering documents, such as specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans.
• Aid in the development of outage staging plans and commissioning documentation.
• Provide configuration support for protection relays and automation devices.
• Evaluate vendor drawings and technical submissions to ensure compliance with project specifications and design intent.
• Engage in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability assessments.
• Offer engineering support throughout construction and commissioning phases, including responding to RFIs and participating in site visits and field assessments.
• Take part in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and inspections as necessary.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (civil/structural, electrical layout, telecom, etc.) to ensure integrated designs.
• Support project delivery by managing assigned responsibilities within defined scope, schedule, and budget constraints.
• Exhibit initiative in taking on greater responsibilities and contributing to technical problem-solving efforts.
• Maintain precise documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Travel to client locations as required during project execution.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
• Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for/working towards P.Eng. designation.
• 3–5 years of pertinent experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design.
• Familiarity with substation protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and AC/DC designs.
• Knowledge of utility standards and industry codes (CSA, IEEE, IEC, Canadian Electrical Code) is advantageous.
• Proficient in AutoCAD; familiarity with protection and controls tools or relay software is beneficial.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to develop practical engineering solutions.
• Capability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-oriented environment.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with internal teams, clients, and vendors.
