This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Design, assess, and analyze electrical systems pertinent to corporate decarbonization strategies, which include electrification, grid integration, power electronics, and low-carbon energy technologies.
• Develop and sustain transmission planning, system reliability, and integrated resource planning (IRPs/ISPs), along with renewable integration studies tailored to client specifications, providing supplementary analyses for the production cost modeling teams.
• Perform thorough technical due diligence on projects, technologies, and proposals related to electrical infrastructure, energy storage, or industrial electrification.
• Present, document, and translate complex engineering analyses and models into clear, actionable recommendations for external clients, internal teams, the Carbon Direct leadership team, and executive stakeholders.
• Collaborate across various functions with scientists, policy experts, and business development teams to enhance client deliverables and foster thought leadership.
• Contribute to publications, technical reports, and external communications concerning electrification and grid decarbonization.
• Work collaboratively with both power and non-power teams, maintain models and integration with other teams, and assist in developing power system models for climate technology, grid modernization, and industrial decarbonization efforts.
• Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, coupled with experience in managing or leading internal and external clients within the electric power sector, ideally in consulting, advisory roles, corporate settings, or data centers.
• Expertise in transmission models (N-1 reliability, SCUC, SCED), AC/DC power flow models and their use in market operations, congestion management, and capacity planning, including both steady-state and dynamic modeling of transmission networks utilizing industry-standard tools such as PSS/E, PowerWorld, or PSCAD.
• Experience with production-cost models like PyPSA, PROMOD, Plexos, AURORA for simulating generation dispatch, market clearing, and system operations.
• Extensive modeling experience in wholesale electricity markets and/or grid operations within North America and EU markets, with a strong understanding of energy market rules and structures (ISOs/RTOs), capacity markets, resource adequacy frameworks, and reliability standards.
• Several years of experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, along with strong written and verbal communication skills, including the capacity to present complex analytics to non-technical audiences.
