📋 Description

• Assist in the modernization and continual advancement of MassMutual’s Disability Income medical and non-medical underwriting manuals.

• Investigate medical conditions, treatment innovations, clinical outcomes, claims experiences, and industry standards.

• Draft, review, and enhance medical underwriting guidelines.

• Collaborate with underwriting, medical, claims, pricing, compliance, product, and leadership teams.

• Contribute to impairment-focused underwriting frameworks and clinical risk stratification efforts.

• Convert guidelines into rules-based decision-making logic, knowledge base content, and future underwriting technology needs.

• Support training, communication, and change management initiatives to encourage the adoption of updated underwriting directives.


⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in Individual Disability Income Insurance Underwriting or 8 years as an Occupational Health Nurse.

• At least 8 years of progressive experience in Disability Income underwriting, encompassing medical risk assessment, interpretation of underwriting standards, and underwriting operations.

• Over 8 years of experience in evaluating medical evidence and applying underwriting guidelines to determine insurability and risk.

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in researching and analyzing data related to medical, claims, underwriting, and industry practices.

• Possession of Individual Disability Income underwriting approval authority for amounts of at least $15,000.

• A Bachelor’s Degree is regarded as a preferred qualification.

• Completion or progress in relevant industry exams/designations such as ALU, LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, FALU, DIA, DIF, RHU, or CLU.

• Advanced understanding of individual Disability Income insurance practices, underwriting standards, risk selection, and operations.

• Experience in developing, updating, or maintaining medical underwriting guidelines, manuals, job aids, or formal underwriting frameworks.

• Capability to interpret medical literature, clinical trends, and risk insights into actionable underwriting guidance.

• Familiarity with impairment-based underwriting frameworks and clinical risk stratification.

• Exposure to automated or digital underwriting tools, rules-based decision-making, or development of underwriting knowledge bases.

• Strong written communication skills to produce clear, concise, and actionable technical guidance.

• Proven ability to collaborate across functions and influence others through expertise, credibility, and sound judgment.
