This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +15 more locations.
• Take charge of the company's global indirect tax strategy by determining priorities and risk tolerance in collaboration with Finance and Legal leadership.
• Build, oversee, and nurture a tax team, creating standards, workflows, and pathways for career development.
• Develop the roadmap for the tax technology stack, which includes Avalara and related tools.
• Spearhead automation and process initiatives aimed at minimizing manual operations and facilitating global expansion.
• Design and execute indirect tax processes and controls tailored for a marketplace model.
• Manage relationships with external tax advisors across various jurisdictions.
• Provide guidance to strategic creators and high-value partners regarding tax implications and Kickstarter’s tax policy.
• Ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of VAT, sales tax, and corporate filings.
• Collaborate with Legal, Product, and executive leadership to address tax implications of new offerings, markets, business models, entity structuring, and cross-border issues.
• Oversee the transfer pricing policy and documentation among subsidiaries.
• Lead responses to tax notices and audits, coordinating with external counsel and advisors.
• Set reconciliation standards between internal data and filed tax returns.
• Direct product testing standards to ensure accuracy in tax calculations.
• Manage tax contributions to audited financial statements, technical positions, disclosures, and month-end close processes.
• Act as the executive-level contact for tax-related matters in board and audit committee documentation.
• Establish strategy and standards for the tax help center and customer-facing indirect tax resources.
• Significant experience in indirect tax leadership, preferably with a background in a two-sided marketplace or platform business.
• Hands-on technical expertise with Avalara and similar tax engines, including configuration, troubleshooting, and optimization.
• Experience with Big 4 accounting at the Senior Manager level or higher, or equivalent experience at a prestigious law firm.
• Familiarity with both large and small companies and the evolving needs of tax functions as organizations grow.
• Proven experience in creating training and enablement programs for internal audiences without tax expertise, in collaboration with Finance and Legal.
• Strong technical foundation in tax code and practical tax-risk assessment.
• Experience in developing audit documentation and processes.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and apply sound judgment.
• Experience in building tax teams, technology, and processes from the ground up.
• Collaborative experience working alongside Product, Legal, Finance, and other departments.
• Preference for candidates located in the United States or United Kingdom.
