Director, Smart Grid – Electric Utility Consulting

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Develop and implement JSI’s Smart Grid consulting strategy aimed at EMCs and municipal utilities.

• Create service offerings that encompass grid modernization, operational efficiency, technology strategy, and business case development.

• Ensure alignment of Smart Grid initiatives with JSI’s wider broadband, fiber, and digital infrastructure practices.

• Assist executive leadership in discovering new market opportunities at the intersection of energy and telecom.

• Collaborate with the sales and strategy teams to design and execute go-to-market strategies focused on grid modernization, operational transformation, and technology strategy.

• Activate and enhance industry relationships to secure new client engagements and broaden JSI’s presence in energy and infrastructure markets.

• Represent JSI at national conferences, cooperative associations, and forums for thought leadership.

• Act as a trusted advisor to executive leadership at electric cooperatives and municipal utilities.

• Lead client discovery workshops, strategic planning sessions, and modernization assessments.

• Identify and pursue new revenue streams, partnerships, and long-term consulting relationships.

• Work alongside JSI Sales & Marketing to position Smart Grid offerings within targeted markets.

• Direct multi-disciplinary consulting projects, including: Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), SCADA and distribution automation, Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), grid communications and fiber integration, operational efficiency and organizational transformation, funding initiatives, as well as providing guidance on technology selection, vendor evaluation, and implementation roadmaps, and supporting the development of financial models and business cases for modernization efforts.

• Build internal capabilities, frameworks, and methodologies for electric utility consulting.

• Collaborate across JSI teams, including Engineering, Financial Services, Operations Consulting, and Regulatory.

• Mentor internal staff and assist in cultivating subject matter expertise within the organization.

• Contribute to thought leadership, conference presentations, and industry publications.

• Moderate to significant travel (30–50%) to client locations, industry events, and JSI offices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in electric utilities, grid modernization, or energy infrastructure consulting.

• Proven experience working with electric cooperatives, public power entities, or municipal utilities.

• Strong comprehension of Smart Grid technologies, including AMI, SCADA, distribution automation, and grid communications.

• Experience in leading client-facing consulting initiatives or large-scale transformation projects.

• Demonstrated ability to convert technical concepts into executive-level strategies and business outcomes.

• Bachelor’s degree is required; a degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field is preferred.
