Director, Payments Risk

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Create a payments risk strategy and roadmap in collaboration with the VP of Payments.

• Establish risk coverage, controls, monitoring, and success metrics for new capabilities.

• Enhance risk appetite and control frameworks.

• Oversee daily risk execution, manage queues, address escalations, and handle uncovered cases.

• Adjust rules and assess cases as risk trends evolve.

• Develop and sustain incident-readiness playbooks, escalation procedures, and decision-making frameworks.

• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Finance, and Data teams on requirements, dashboards, and reporting.

• Monitor portfolio-level losses and offer risk insights for forecasting, business cases, launches, pricing, and partner decisions.

• Advocate for payments risk across non-specialist teams.

• Create scalable AI and tooling solutions.

• Mentor, develop, and enhance capabilities within the Risk team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in payments and/or fintech.

• At least 3 years of experience in team leadership and outcome ownership.

• Strong practical understanding of onboarding, underwriting, processing, settlement, reconciliation, and dispute management.

• Solid foundation in Stripe or similar infrastructure experience.

• Proven experience in developing or managing fraud detection, monitoring, and controls.

• Capability to balance loss prevention with customer experience and business growth.

• Commercial insight into how risk decisions influence growth.

• Experience in creating reports for leadership decision-making.

• Background in establishing new processes or products.

• Automation-oriented mindset with a focus on AI and tooling.

• High level of autonomy, sound judgment, and meticulous attention to detail.

• Proficient in conveying the complexities of payments and risk to non-specialist teams.
