Director, FHIR Technical Ecosystem

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Establish direction, resource allocation, and resilience strategy for FHIR development, validation, and publication tools and infrastructure.

• Ensure that tools and infrastructure are consistently maintained and that no critical element relies solely on one individual.

• Guarantee the resource availability and resilience of terminology services infrastructure.

• Oversee the integrated infrastructure utilized for standards development, encompassing publication infrastructure, GitHub repositories, build infrastructure, JIRA, and Confluence.

• Ensure a reliable workflow from proposal through commenting, resolution, building, and publication.

• Take ownership of the health, integration, and evolution of the standards-development toolchain.

• Manage changes across repositories, issue-tracking workflows, build processes, and Work Group operations.

• Lead the implementation-guide authoring framework, quality expectations, and consistency standards.

• Develop specific implementation guides for adoption programs and provide support to implementers.

• Establish documented practices, shared technical responsibility, and succession planning across key FHIR technical functions.

• Maintain operational knowledge of FHIR tools and publication processes.

• Contribute FHIR expertise to HL7 educational programs and certification efforts.

• Act as a senior FHIR technical subject-matter expert for Standards Implementation funded projects, grants, and consulting activities.

• Collaborate with HL7 leadership and management on business development initiatives.

• Oversee and develop technical and program staff responsible for FHIR tools and publication.

• Manage budgets, timelines, risks, and dependencies related to FHIR technical operations.

• Coordinate with leadership from FHIR Product, Deputy FHIR Product, Contributor Engagement, and Standards Implementation.


⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in health IT, interoperability, and standards, including technical program and personnel leadership.

• Strong comprehension of FHIR tools, publication processes, and the specification lifecycle.

• Proven history of establishing resilient technical operations and mitigating key-person risk through documentation, shared ownership, and succession planning.

• Experience in managing software and tool maintenance through employees, contractors, or shared technical services.

• Exceptional written communication skills and the ability to convey technical operations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Demonstrated dedication to open, community-led development.

• Proven track record of successful business development initiatives.
