Director, Environmental Health – Safety

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Develop and oversee the EHS program for the data center campus and its supporting offices.

• Create and manage the campus EHS strategy, policies, and yearly objectives.

• Establish and maintain an EHS management system that encompasses risk assessment, safe work practices, training, inspections, incident management, and continuous improvement.

• Set safety metrics and communicate performance and risk to leadership.

• Ensure adherence to OSHA, NFPA, EPA, TCEQ, local authorities, and relevant codes and standards.

• Lead hazard identification and risk assessments, which include JHA, PPE, confined space, lockout/tagout, hot work, working at heights, and electrical safety.

• Maintain emergency response plans and coordinate drills.

• Collaborate with the Environmental Compliance lead on environmental initiatives.

• Define and enforce safe work practices for electrical, mechanical, controls, lifting/rigging, confined space, hot work, and contractor activities.

• Review method statements, lift plans, switching procedures, and maintenance plans.

• Evaluate general contractor safety programs and determine which activities to internalize versus outsource.

• Oversee incident investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and communicate lessons learned.

• Manage chemical inventories, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), storage, labeling, and spill response efforts.

• Establish EHS expectations for contractors and vendors, participating in pre-qualifications and bid reviews.

• Ensure safe construction practices in proximity to live data center operations.

• Conduct audits and spot checks for contractor compliance.

• Develop, deliver, or coordinate EHS training for employees, contractors, and visitors.

• Own or coordinate CPR/AED training sessions.

• Foster a proactive safety culture that encourages stop-work authority and hazard reporting.

• Maintain records of inspections, incidents, training, permits, and regulatory submissions.

• Lead internal audits and facilitate external audits or regulatory inspections.

• Prepare EHS reports and dashboards for leadership and stakeholders.

• Present safety and compliance performance metrics to customers and external stakeholders.

• Build and manage an EHS function that aligns with campus growth.

• Collaborate with HR on return-to-work and injury case management.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.

• One or more of the following certifications: CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), CHMM, CSHM, or equivalent EHS credential.

• Over 10 years of progressive EHS experience in industrial, manufacturing, energy, data center, chemical, pharmaceutical, or other high-risk environments.

• At least 5 years in a senior EHS leadership position with responsibilities across multiple functions or sites.

• Proven experience in building EHS programs from the ground up.

• Experience managing safety in a complex, large-campus setting with multiple trades and contractors.

• Working knowledge of OSHA 1910 and OSHA 1926; OSHA 40 trained.

• Certified CPR/AED trainer, or capable of obtaining certification quickly.

• Direct experience with OSHA and EPA compliance programs, including audits, corrective actions, and regulatory interactions.

• Experience in presenting safety and compliance programs to customers and clients.

• Familiarity with high-energy electrical, mechanical, and chemical systems.

• Site-level safety accountability with a hands-on approach.

• Comprehensive understanding of OSHA regulations, NFPA standards, and practices for high-reliability facilities.

• Strong skills in incident investigation and root-cause analysis.

• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities; capable of producing procedures, training materials, and reports.

• Willingness to work in plant or field environments.

• Willingness to travel regularly to the Fort Stockton, TX campus.

• Availability to respond to incidents and emergencies outside of standard business hours.
