This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.
• The Design Engineer is responsible for developing and testing renewable energy models, conducting dynamic system studies, assisting with interconnection applications, and collaborating with clients to adapt to changing grid and compliance requirements.
• Create PSSE, PSLF, TSAT, and PSCAD models for renewable energy facilities.
• Execute model quality assessments and benchmarking for various simulation software.
• Interpret dynamic model block diagrams and adjust parameters to fulfill regional performance standards.
• Assist with interconnection applications, including initial plant design, drafting basic preliminary drawings, and completing application forms with design specifics.
• Perform preliminary system analyses, such as reactive power studies.
• Collaborate closely with developer clients to understand their requirements, timelines, design modifications, and address feedback from system operators and transmission owners.
• Stay informed about updates regarding various regional requirements for interconnection applications, processes, timelines, and queue schedules.
• Respond promptly to customer design alterations, inquiries, and deadlines, maintaining a flexible approach to work tasks.
• Keep updated on regulatory changes, new grid codes, and evolving ISO/RTO requirements associated with grid interconnections.
• Conduct voltage and frequency ride-through studies and assist in model validation for renewable projects to ensure compliance with NERC standards.
• Remain informed about new industry guidelines and standards for modeling and NERC compliance pertaining to relevant technologies.
• Aid in the development of tools to automate and enhance model quality testing and analysis processes.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or an equivalent qualification, is required.
• At least 2 years of professional experience, with a minimum of 1 year in a role directly related to power systems.
• Proficiency in steady-state analysis and/or dynamic analysis using PSS®E and PSCAD is necessary.
• Prior experience with transmission system operators/transmission owners (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO, CAISO) is preferred.
• Familiarity with PSCAD, PSLF, and TSAT modeling is preferred.
• Experience in programming with Python is preferred.
• Must be capable of independently completing assigned tasks.
• Must actively manage personal workload, adapt to changing requirements, and maintain flexibility.
• Should be a self-starter willing to identify and implement improvements, while utilizing support from others.
• Comfortable asking questions when acquiring new skills is essential.
• Must possess analytical skills, be self-motivated, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive and enthusiastic demeanor.
• Strong presentation and verbal/written communication skills are required.
• Must demonstrate strong interpersonal abilities to build and sustain effective working relationships with colleagues, management, clients, and external agencies.
• Should show openness to innovation by embracing and applying emerging technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve challenges, and promote continuous improvement.
