This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Oversee, sustain, and enhance essential SQL Server databases hosted on AWS EC2.

• Provide support for a high-availability, low-latency trading application.

• Monitor and optimize SQL Server performance.

• Detect and resolve query bottlenecks, index fragmentation, blocking, and deadlocks.

• Optimize indexes, execution plans, and stored procedures to meet sub-millisecond latency requirements.

• Conduct performance benchmarking and capacity assessments.

• Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server instances.

• Manage SQL Server instances across Development, UAT, and Production environments.

• Execute capacity planning, storage management, and performance tuning.

• Implement and uphold database security, user roles, permissions, and auditing.

• Design, implement, and manage high-availability solutions.

• Develop and sustain disaster recovery plans and execute regular drills.

• Ensure recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO) targets are achieved.

• Handle SQL Server deployments on AWS EC2, including instance sizing, EBS volumes, and network configuration.

• Utilize CloudWatch, AWS Backup, VPC, Security Groups, IAM, and S3 for monitoring, backups, access control, and storage.

• Optimize EC2 instance types for memory-intensive SQL workloads.

• Manage SQL Server licensing within AWS environments.

• Design and implement backup strategies, automating backup processes.

• Securely store backups on Amazon S3.

• Conduct backup validation and restoration testing.

• Ensure compliance with data retention policies.

• Implement encryption, auditing, and access controls.

• Perform vulnerability assessments and apply necessary security patches.

• Manage SQL Server certificates and encryption keys.

• Establish proactive monitoring and alerting mechanisms.

• Address and resolve P1/P2 database incidents.

• Participate in 24/7 on-call support coverage.

• Maintain incident logs and post-mortem reports.

• Collaborate with application developers, DevOps, and trading system architects.

• Review and approve database change requests and deployment scripts.

• Maintain database documentation, architecture diagrams, runbooks, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

• Participate in Change Advisory Board (CAB) meetings for production changes.


⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in the field.

• Extensive expertise in SQL Server administration.

• Strong understanding of the performance and reliability requirements of financial and trading systems.

• Experience managing Microsoft SQL Server 2019/2022 instances on AWS EC2.

• Proficient in managing SQL Server instances across Development, UAT, and Production environments.

• Skilled in using SQL Server Profiler, Extended Events, DMVs, and Query Store.

• Knowledgeable in Always On Availability Groups, SQL Server Failover Cluster Instances, Log Shipping, and Database Mirroring.

• Experience in developing and maintaining Disaster Recovery plans and conducting DR drills.

• Familiarity with AWS EC2, EBS, CloudWatch, AWS Backup, VPC, Security Groups, IAM, and S3.

• Knowledge of EC2 instance types like r5 and x1e for memory-intensive SQL workloads.

• Understanding of SQL Server licensing in AWS environments, including BYOL and License Included models.

• Experienced in designing Full, Differential, and Transaction Log backup strategies.

• Knowledgeable in SQL Server security best practices, including TDE, Always Encrypted, auditing, and access controls.

• Awareness of financial industry regulations such as SOX, PCI-DSS, and GDPR as applicable.

• Experience with vulnerability assessments, security patches, SQL Server certificates, and encryption keys.

• Proficient in establishing proactive monitoring and alerting systems.

• Ability to respond effectively to P1/P2 database incidents.

• Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation.

• Experience collaborating with application developers, DevOps, and trading system architects.

• Skilled in reviewing database change requests and deployment scripts.

• Experienced in maintaining database architecture diagrams, runbooks, and SOPs.

• Participation in CAB meetings is required.
