This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +4 more states.
• Oversee the AllTrails Data Science & Engineering team
• Recruit, mentor, and guide data engineers and applied data scientists
• Promote team well-being, professional growth, and high performance through effective coaching and performance management
• Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to convert business needs into technical specifications and prioritize projects
• Provide expertise on data, AI, and automation to enhance internal productivity, trail content, map quality, and member personalization
• Lead the design and implementation of scalable batch and streaming data pipelines
• Enhance the productionization of machine learning models and algorithmic systems
• Manage orchestration, transformation, alerting, and the flow of organizational data
• Address performance bottlenecks and system failures to maintain high uptime
• Advocate for data reliability, quality, privacy, compliance, and cost efficiency
• Develop data cataloging, documentation, and self-service tools
• Accelerate time-to-insight, debugging speed, and deployment velocity
• Report directly to the Director of Engineering, Maps & Data
• Assist product pods and partner teams including data analytics, finance, and marketing
• Minimum of 5 years in data engineering
• At least 3 years of experience managing teams in data engineering, machine learning, and data science
• Proven experience in coaching senior individual contributors and fostering career development
• Flexible and self-driven leadership capabilities in fast-paced, ambiguous environments
• Practical experience managing GCP data infrastructure and implementing data governance
• Experience with production-grade data access, storage, caching, and optimization
• Deep proficiency with BigQuery or Snowflake, Dataform or dbt, and Apache Airflow
• Expertise in designing SQL/Python pipelines utilizing Dataflow, Spark, or similar parallel processing frameworks
• Understanding of dimensional and star-schema data modeling
• Familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD, and monitoring and observability tools such as Datadog or New Relic
• Availability to participate in a monthly on-call rotation
• Experience overseeing the full ML lifecycle/MLOps for recommendation, ranking, personalization, and classification engines
• Capability to lead foundational platforms and applied data products
• Skill in transforming business requirements into technical specifications and delivering projects from start to finish
• Offers contingent upon successful background check
