• Conduct research and develop innovative legal arguments and potential litigation strategies, overseeing case or project teams as necessary.
• Attract and retain clients and plaintiffs; collaborate with outside counsel, co-counsel, and opposing counsel; and represent Protect Democracy in non-litigation external environments (such as coalitions).
• Assist in establishing our reputation as thought leaders on legal matters aligned with our mission.
• Engage in and manage discovery processes, which include informal fact-finding, evidence collection, document review, witness interviews, written discovery practices, depositions, and expert discovery.
• Formulate, influence, and implement complex strategies for litigation, policy reform, and integrated advocacy projects that align with our mission.
• Conduct research, draft, and revise pleadings, motions, and other briefs submitted in impact litigation.
• Collaborate with the communications team to execute communication-based strategies that garner support for legal theories of change (e.g., legal memos, primers, editorials, and op-eds).
• In conjunction with policy advocates, contribute to innovative policy solutions and campaigns, working alongside legislators, agencies, experts, and coalitions to promote them.
• Participate in initiatives that foster a positive organizational culture.
• Between five to ten years of legal experience (including clerkships).
• Experience in election law or voting rights law and/or background in impact litigation or supporting policy advocacy.
• Outstanding analytical capabilities along with writing and presentation skills tailored for both legal and non-legal audiences.
• Capacity to track, prioritize, and balance a wide range of responsibilities.
• Ability to cultivate collaborative relationships and thrive in a team environment with individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
• A growth mindset and eagerness to give and receive feedback in all directions.
• Adaptability and the ability to excel in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
