Compute Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Define the technical direction for the computing environment.

• Develop scalable and resilient server and virtualization architectures.

• Oversee infrastructure projects from start to finish and manage capacity and lifecycle planning.

• Set team standards and best practices, review work, and mentor other engineers.

• Provision, configure, patch, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot physical servers as well as Windows/Linux virtual machines.

• Design and manage hypervisor environments, including host management, resource allocation, snapshots, templates, and high availability/clustering.

• Administer Microsoft Entra ID/Azure AD, including hybrid identity, conditional access, roles, and SSO integrations.

• Manage Microsoft Intune for device enrollment, configuration profiles, compliance policies, and application deployment.

• Provision and support Windows 365 Cloud PCs.

• Assist backend systems and resolve authentication, networking, and integration issues.

• Automate provisioning and maintenance processes using PowerShell and other scripting tools.

• Implement monitoring, alerting, backup/recovery, patching, hardening, and access controls.

• Engage in incident response and root-cause analysis.

• Maintain documentation for configurations, procedures, and runbooks.

• Collaborate with networking, security, applications, and helpdesk teams, providing escalation support.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline.

• 5–7 years of experience in systems/infrastructure/compute engineering or a related IT operations role.

• Extensive, expert-level experience administering Windows Server and a solid working knowledge of Linux.

• Proven track record in designing and managing a virtualization platform such as VMware vSphere or Hyper-V at scale.

• Strong practical experience with Microsoft Entra ID/Azure AD, including Entra Connect, conditional access, role-based access control, and SSO integrations.

• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Intune for device configuration, compliance, and application deployment.

• Hands-on experience deploying and supporting Windows 365/Cloud PC at scale.

• Strong scripting and automation capabilities, especially in PowerShell.

• Good understanding of DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, firewalls, and VPNs.

• Experience in designing and managing backup, monitoring, and patch management systems.

• Excellent troubleshooting abilities across applications, identity, and infrastructure layers.

• Experience leading infrastructure projects and mentoring fellow engineers.

• Strong communication and documentation skills.

• Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified, VMware VCP, or equivalent are preferred.

• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible is preferred.

• Experience with Microsoft 365 services and Defender for Endpoint is preferred.

• Knowledge of ITIL or structured change-management practices is preferred.
