This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +11 more states.
• Oversee NCYL’s earned media strategy and track daily news and developments pertinent to NCYL’s initiatives.
• Detect emerging opportunities and risks, advising on the appropriate public engagement for NCYL.
• Arrange interviews, podcast appearances, and thought leadership opportunities for NCYL leaders.
• Assist in the implementation of the strategic communications plan, which includes priorities, goals, objectives, strategies, and tactics.
• Coordinate cross-functional partnerships with organizational leadership, program leads, and the development team.
• Establish communications goals, identify target audiences, and execute timely strategic initiatives.
• Provide communication support and project management for program teams.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with reporters, editors, producers, podcast hosts, newsletter writers, and other external partners.
• Compose and refine press releases, statements, talking points, media materials, and other public-facing content.
• Collaborate with NCYL’s writer to create and sustain an editorial calendar.
• Synchronize earned media, thought leadership, and digital distribution efforts.
• Spearhead digital rollout for reports, campaigns, events, rapid-response initiatives, and fundraising communications.
• Assist in managing communications consultants, including needs assessments, timelines, and budgeting.
• Lead the Communications team by supervising team members, formulating work plans, assigning tasks, and setting goals.
• Undertake additional duties as assigned.
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience in media relations, strategic communications, journalism, public affairs, advocacy communications, or related fields.
• Proven track record of securing media coverage, interviews, podcasts, op-eds, and other thought leadership opportunities.
• Experience in enhancing the public profile of senior leaders, experts, or spokespersons.
• Strong news judgment and robust editorial instincts.
• Background in collaborating with advocates, attorneys, youth, elected officials, and/or community leaders.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills, including drafting for media, executives, and public audiences.
• Experience in managing editorial calendars and translating complex issues into engaging public language.
• Expertise in promoting responsible, human-centered storytelling.
• Strong understanding of values-based or asset framing and experience working with diverse audiences.
• Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities across complex issue areas.
• Meticulous attention to detail and sound editorial judgment.
• Experience overseeing the work of a small team.
• Strong dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Ability to apply a racial and social justice lens to advocacy while centering the voices of marginalized children, youth, and their families.

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Some travel may be required.
