• Reporting to the Co-Directors, the Communications Director will establish and steer the strategy for all communication efforts, including digital platforms, public relations messaging, and promotional content, to consistently represent BLMP’s mission.
• The Communications Director will ensure that BLMP is recognized as a key source, distributor, and channel of information within its diverse network and membership.
• Leading the communications team, the Communications Director will collaborate with other staff members as a strategic partner on various organizational initiatives.
• Oversee members of the communications team and facilitate departmental meetings.
• Create, implement, and assess comprehensive communication plans aimed at the organization’s varied audiences, in partnership with BLMP staff, consultants, members, and allied organizations.
• Collaborate closely with the communications strategist and digital organizer to lead a content strategy that engages different audience segments, while developing and executing a narrative strategy in support of Black liberation, justice for Black migrants, and prison abolition.
• Guide and advise the communications team on website management, coordinating with the communications strategist to ensure that new and consistent content is regularly published (including links to articles, stories, and events).
• Supervise the creation, distribution, and upkeep of all print and electronic materials, such as newsletters, brochures, annual reports, and the website.
• Enhance BLMP’s brand and visual identity, develop and manage media contact lists, and oversee the department's budget.
• Establish rapid-response protocols and communication strategies for crisis situations.
• Represent BLMP in movement-specific communication forums and coalitions, integrating BLMP’s narrative strategy into the larger movement narrative.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in communications, preferably in a leadership role within a nonprofit organization, covering areas such as web content, newsletters, and donor communications.
• Proven ability to transform knowledge into engaging and useful messaging and distribute it effectively to the appropriate audiences through optimal channels.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; capable of developing and embedding an organizational voice across platforms, organizing and presenting information clearly, and keeping abreast of evolving tools and best practices.
• Highly collaborative, goal-oriented, and relationship-focused; values and incorporates feedback; proactive and comfortable with a participatory leadership approach.
• Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously under tight deadlines.
• Availability to work evenings and weekends during emergencies.
• A deep commitment to the liberation of Black communities, justice for Black migrants, and the abolition of prisons.
• Dedicated to centering and nurturing the leadership of Black migrants and first-generation Black individuals who identify as TGNCI (transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex), women, non-binary individuals, and/or persons living with disabilities.
• Bilingual.
