Cloud Native Geospatial Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Engage in software development by writing and maintaining clean, tested Python code that operates reliably across extensive areas.

• Handle large-scale data by working with significant raster and vector datasets utilizing cloud-native formats and storage solutions.

• Foster collaboration by creating tools that can be utilized by other teams, engaging with the Platform, Science, Modeling, and Applications teams.

• Develop and sustain STAC catalogs and cloud-optimized data (COG, GeoParquet, Zarr) to ensure that large datasets are easily searchable and swiftly accessible.

• Write reproducible pipelines that process terrain, hydrography, and imagery at scales ranging from regional to continental, leveraging distributed computing.

• Establish and manage the services that publish and tile the data, including pgSTAC and TiTiler, ensuring they remain reliable and versioned.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Master's degree in geospatial science, geography, environmental or earth science, hydrology, computer science, or a related field; alternatively, a Bachelor's degree with 2 years of experience in building geospatial data pipelines, tools, or cloud-native services; or equivalent hands-on experience in lieu of a degree.

• Proficient in Python with strong software practices including Git, testing, and code review.

• Practical experience with cloud-native geospatial formats and services, along with hands-on experience in AWS (our primary cloud); familiarity with GCP or Azure is also advantageous.

• Solid understanding of geospatial fundamentals including projections, raster and vector data, and common GIS tools.

• Experience with the STAC ecosystem and tools such as pgSTAC, stac-fastapi, or TiTiler.

• Knowledge in distributed processing using Dask, Spark, cloud batch, or Google Earth Engine.

• Familiarity with the modern geospatial Python stack: xarray, rasterio, geopandas, and formats like COG, GeoParquet, and Zarr.

• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD for AWS deployments (e.g., Terraform or CloudFormation, Docker, GitHub Actions).

• Ability to transform models or analyses into operational, regularly updated products or forecasts.

• Background in machine learning and remote sensing related to environmental or land-cover projects.

• Knowledge in hydrology or environmental science.

• Reside in the Colorado Front Range for occasional in-person collaboration.
