Backend Engineer, Source Code Experience – Ruby

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Create secure, thoroughly tested, and high-performance features and enhancements utilizing Ruby and GraphQL.

• Navigate complex requirements and legacy limitations to provide clear solutions while ensuring system reliability.

• Design and oversee backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic that support source code workflows.

• Collaborate both asynchronously and synchronously across various functions and teams, engaging domain experts as necessary.

• Employ AI coding agents for well-defined tasks and critically assess their outputs.

• Produce maintainable code in accordance with GitLab standards and actively participate in code reviews.

• Monitor production health metrics, engage in Tier 2 on-call duties, troubleshoot incidents, contribute to root cause analysis, and enhance observability and resilience.

• Disseminate knowledge through code reviews, technical documentation, and collaborative efforts.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL.

• Knowledge of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices.

• Experience in contributing to user-facing workflows and upholding the functionality of underlying systems.

• Experience in writing backend unit and integration tests.

• Familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review methodologies.

• Experience utilizing AI coding agents and assessing their outputs, or a desire to develop these skills within a complex monorepo.

• Proficient written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Capability to provide status updates in a remote, asynchronous environment.

• Ability to prioritize tasks, navigate ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance as necessary.
