Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead and steer the development of Storyblok’s next-generation customer-facing products and features by creating scalable and dependable backend systems utilizing modern technologies (primarily Ruby on Rails, with additional skills in other programming languages such as Python, Rust, or Elixir being advantageous).

• Take charge of the performance and scalability of our APIs, optimizing queries and data models using PostgreSQL and other storage solutions.

• Design and implement data workflows that may incorporate relational, NoSQL, or vector databases according to project requirements.

• Collaborate on the integration of AI-driven features and services, ensuring they meet production readiness, scalability, and maintainability standards.

• Incorporate automated testing into development workflows and continuously elevate the standards for performance, security, and reliability.

• Gain a comprehensive understanding of our codebase and domain, actively shaping technical standards, sharing knowledge with colleagues, and contributing to documentation.

• Proactively resolve bugs and production issues for our customers, showcasing strong ownership while balancing speed and quality.

• Work closely with product owners, designers, and other stakeholders to comprehend and convert business requirements into well-structured, sustainable technical solutions.

• Engage in thoughtful code reviews and provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers in a respectful, open, and empathetic manner.

• Serve as a proactive team player, taking initiative to remove obstacles, assist teammates in overcoming challenges, and complete work assignments.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of relevant experience as a Backend Engineer, with a preference for at least 3+ years in Ruby on Rails.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Strong experience with at least one major backend framework (e.g., preference for Ruby on Rails; familiarity with FastAPI, Flask, or Express is a plus).

• Experience with PostgreSQL; familiarity with NoSQL or vector databases (e.g., Qdrant, Pinecone, or Weaviate) is a plus.

• Proficient in automated testing frameworks (e.g., RSpec, PyTest, Jest) and CI/CD best practices.

• Solid grasp of design patterns, development best practices, object-oriented design, algorithms, and data structures.

• Knowledge of tools like Redis, Sidekiq, Memcached, or their equivalents.

• Experience with RESTful services and microservices; exposure to GraphQL is a plus.

• Proficiency in Git and contemporary development workflows.

• Experience with cloud-based infrastructure (AWS preferred; GCP or Azure is a plus).

• Familiarity with modern AI/ML services or data-intensive workflows is desirable.

• Ability to produce efficient, secure, well-documented, and clean code.

• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a collaborative, remote-first environment.

• Demonstrated ownership mindset, confidence, and motivation to meaningfully contribute to Storyblok’s growth as part of a high-performing team.
