This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maine, +2 more states.
• Provide strategic direction to business partners throughout Unum Group
• Oversee activities and impact business decisions and results
• Recruit, manage, and develop highly skilled tax professionals
• Formulate, implement, and uphold tax policies and procedures
• Guide financial analysis that supports business decisions
• Foster cross-functional collaborations across the global organization
• Drive change management and transformation initiatives
• Coach and mentor team members to enhance organizational capability
• Supervise daily operations of corporate income tax staff
• Oversee hiring, performance evaluations, talent development, and compensation decisions
• Assist with quarterly and annual tax accounting and reporting
• Direct income tax expense forecasting for financial plans and budgets
• Collaborate with finance, business planning, and business lines on US GAAP and statutory tax forecasting
• Offer tax insights, guidance, strategies, and training to both internal and external clients
• Create tax technology strategies and develop a tax technology roadmap
• Collaborate with IT and Finance on accounting system practices and tax-rule compliance
• Research, monitor, and interpret federal and state income tax laws and legislative developments
• Advise tax management and staff on federal and state taxation changes
• Articulate and defend the Company’s tax positions to executives, auditors, and regulatory bodies
• Formulate strategies to optimize tax deductions for Unum subsidiaries
• Identify and document tax risks and ensure Sarbanes-Oxley tax controls are in place
• Lead or assist with IRS audits of federal consolidated income tax returns
• Bachelor’s degree and CPA with experience in public accounting or equivalent experience in a corporate tax department of a large corporation, including insurance and/or corporate tax with substantial work experience
• Master’s degree in taxation or JD preferred
• Extensive knowledge of income tax management at both practical and policy levels
• Technical skills necessary to support income tax management
• Proficiency with ERP systems and tax applications
• Comprehensive understanding and application of financial services and/or accounting in the insurance sector preferred
• Strong negotiation and partnership abilities across all management tiers
• Capability to influence and challenge decisions and procedures
• Competence in framing issues, options, and solutions using financial data for business decision-making
• Experience guiding individuals and teams through change
• Background in collaborating with senior management and external stakeholders
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment while managing multiple priorities and resources
• Exceptional conflict resolution and facilitation skills
• Strong conceptual thinking capabilities
• Must possess and maintain a robust foundation in accounting for income taxes under US GAAP and statutory accounting standards
