Associate Program Officer, Transformative AI Fund

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Conduct thorough investigations and evaluations of grant opportunities, focusing on theories of change, team capabilities, and anticipated impact.

• Articulate grantmaking rationale through reports, feedback to applicants, and public communications.

• Identify high-quality applications by leveraging strategic insights, networks, and funding priorities.

• Foster collaborations and partnerships with relevant funders and organizations.

• Oversee relationships with grantees, offering support and guidance to enhance impact.

• Act as a professional and responsive point of contact for applicants.

• Represent the fund at events within the EA and AI safety communities.

• Contribute to the discourse on funding and strategic priorities within EA, AI safety, and longtermist communities.

• Monitor metrics and identify shortcomings in relation to commitments.

• Enhance grantmaking processes for the Transformative AI Fund.

• Develop and refine tools, including LLM-assisted workflows, to minimize repetitive evaluation tasks.

• Collaborate closely with the Head of the Transformative AI Fund, exercising increasing discretion and autonomy.

• Assist in establishing the fund’s processes, systems, and tools.

• Extensive knowledge of AI safety and/or AI governance.

• Current understanding of key research directions, major organizations, ongoing debates, and notable individuals in the field.

• Proficiency in navigating complex discussions regarding AI advancements, timelines, implications, risks, and solutions.

• Demonstrated proactive, self-directed agency and initiative.

• Exceptional analytical skills and sound judgment under pressure and with incomplete information.

• Capacity to differentiate between weak and unfamiliar proposals and evaluate high-risk, high-impact ideas.

• Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.

• Capability to represent the Transformative AI Fund and CEA with professionalism.

• Skill in articulating complex reasoning behind decisions and managing sensitive conversations.

• Dedication to making a significant positive social impact and an appreciation for effective altruism principles.

• Transparency in reasoning and a readiness to adapt views based on robust evidence and reasoning.

• Existing networks in AI safety and/or AI governance, or the ability to establish them swiftly for a junior position.

• Strong project management and organizational capabilities.

• Proficiency in managing an application pipeline, adhering to deadlines, and juggling multiple priorities in a remote, high-autonomy setting.

• Relevant professional background in grantmaking, investment, policy advising, research, or technical leadership is advantageous.

• Preference for candidates who can work across time zones between US Pacific Time and CET.

• Willingness to travel approximately 4–6 times per year.

• Work authorization may be necessary for the designated working location.
