This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Oregon.
• Perform legal research and analysis to assist attorneys in defending communities and the environment.
• Draft legal research memos for partner attorneys, particularly in Spanish.
• Contribute to pleadings and court documents, including amicus curiae briefs.
• Meet with partner attorneys to gain insights into their work.
• Present and disseminate research as required.
• Develop legal resources for ELAW’s website and other collaborative tools.
• Work alongside ELAW attorneys and other team members to provide high-quality information to partners.
• Engage in committees and other initiatives to enhance ELAW.
• Assist with administrative tasks.
• Handle multiple types of projects while managing competing deadlines and priorities.
• Outstanding legal research and writing abilities in Spanish.
• Proficient working knowledge of English.
• Recent law school graduate; obtained a law degree within the last five years.
• Knowledge of environmental justice and environmental law, including associated human rights legislation.
• Experience in researching court rulings from one or more Latin American nations.
• Dedication to ELAW’s mission and public-interest initiatives.
• Proven ability to work effectively in cross-cultural environments.
• J.D. or equivalent law degree that meets the educational prerequisites for licensure in the relevant jurisdiction.
• Licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction, or willing to pursue bar membership or meet requirements for legal practice.
• 1–5 years of pertinent legal experience; candidates with over 5 years will not be considered.
• Exceptional legal research, writing, and communication skills.
• Strong organizational abilities and capacity to manage multiple assignments and competing deadlines.
• Capability to represent ELAW favorably in professional environments.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a small team.
• Professional fluency in Spanish and a good working knowledge of English.
• Legal work experience in Latin America.
• Willingness to utilize technology platforms for virtual collaboration.
• Flexibility to work across various time zones.
• Desired: additional language skills, particularly Portuguese and/or fluency in English.
• Desired: advanced degree in a relevant field if the law degree is at the undergraduate level.
• Desired: initiative to investigate emerging legal and advocacy matters.
• Desired: openness to international travel.
