This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Oversee and lead a team of data reporters and editors.
• Establish benchmarks for reporting, writing, and production for data-centric series.
• Edit data journalism pieces to ensure accuracy, clarity, fairness, and narrative strength.
• Generate and propose story and series concepts.
• Manage projects from the initial concept to publication alongside reporters, editors, and graphics teams.
• Mentor and enhance the capabilities of reporters and editors in data competencies and writing.
• Maintain the editorial quality and integrity of the team's output.
• Collaborate with survey and research specialists to guarantee accurate and well-sourced reporting.
• Facilitate cross-functional cooperation to ensure timely publication of stories.
• Create new data-driven series and pinpoint valuable datasets.
• Assist in guiding and shaping topical surveys and research.
• 7–10+ years of pertinent newsroom experience.
• Proven history in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.
• Established leadership or team management experience within a newsroom setting.
• Exceptional editorial judgment and robust editing skills, particularly for data-intensive stories.
• Comfort in working with data of various qualities and completeness.
• Proficient in identifying inconsistencies within data.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
• Capable of working independently while effectively collaborating across teams.
• Experience in editing or producing ongoing data series or investigative projects is preferred.
• Familiarity with data analysis tools like R or Python is preferred.
• Experience with data visualization techniques is preferred.
• Background in legal industry reporting or research is preferred.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• A degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics, or a related field is preferred.
