Assistant Controller, Government Accounting – Compliance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assist in overseeing the monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes, ensuring deadlines are adhered to and potential issues are identified and addressed proactively.

• Take the lead in developing accounting and reporting procedures necessary to support government-funded and cost-reimbursable projects, including the creation of frameworks for project costing, indirect rate calculations, and the identification of allowable versus unallowable costs.

• Establish processes for tracking, reconciling, and reporting costs in a manner that complies with government audit and reimbursement standards, which includes monitoring and reviewing the accumulation of direct and indirect costs.

• Aid in documenting and operationalizing processes to ensure that controls are designed correctly and executed consistently.

• Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to prepare for financial audits, government audits, and any potential Single Audit / Yellow Book-related requirements, if applicable.

• Work alongside Finance leadership to identify process gaps and spearhead the creation of documentation, policies, and operating procedures needed to address these gaps ahead of new government awards or reporting obligations.

• Partner with program teams, operations, legal, and external advisors regarding government accounting considerations, reporting expectations, and implementation requirements.

• Lead initiatives for process improvement and automation to enhance scalability, control, and the quality of reporting.

• Ensure that the finance organization is capable of supporting a rapidly growing company with increasing complexities while maintaining a practical, business-oriented approach.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including a minimum of 4 years in government contracting, government accounting, or a similar environment involving cost reimbursement, indirect rates, and contract compliance obligations.

• Strong working knowledge of government accounting regulations, encompassing cost reimbursement reporting, treatment of allowable versus unallowable costs, cost allocation methodologies, and audit-ready support for reimbursable expenditures.

• Experience in supporting government audits or similarly stringent compliance environments, with exposure to DCAA, FAR / CAS concepts, incurred cost submissions, Single Audit, Yellow Book, or related frameworks.

• Proven experience in constructing or enhancing controls, policies, and procedures essential for operating within a more formal government-compliance setting.

• Experience in preparing for, supporting, or addressing findings from government audits, Single Audits, or Yellow Book / GAGAS-related environments.

• Strong grounding in U.S. GAAP and core accounting operations, including ownership or significant oversight of the closing process, balance sheet integrity, and financial reporting.

• Demonstrated experience in people management or team leadership, with the capability to review work, mentor others, and elevate quality standards.

• Excellent organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced environment.
