VP Underwriting – Builders Risk

📋 Description

• Establish underwriting strategies and cultivate new broker partnerships.

• Act as a subject matter expert in evaluating and underwriting wood frame builders risk projects.

• Supervise a team of 1-5 members throughout the employee lifecycle.

• Oversee and expand a project portfolio by assessing risk and optimizing carrier capacity in line with agreements and guidelines.

• Mentor and develop Associate Underwriters and Underwriters.

• Conduct performance assessments and make decisions regarding hiring, recruitment, and terminations.

• Set production goals for the team and drive their achievement.

• Review referrals submitted by team members.

• Curate a portfolio in line with underwriting guidelines and pricing tools.

• Contribute insights to underwriting governance and guidelines.

• Lead division-level projects and initiatives.

• Manage the budget for a small team or a segment of the division, including staffing and travel-related expenses.

• Foster relationships with capacity providers.

• Serve as a subject matter expert for peers, leadership, and team members.

• Underwrite complex wood frame and renovation risks, implement capacity limits, and oversee pricing cycles.

• Achieve annual new business objectives through premium income, quote volume, and hit-ratio targets.

• Build connections with key producers to generate and secure business.

• Exercise underwriting authority as defined in the Letter of Authority (LOA).

• Collaborate with the division president and team leaders on the national construction portfolio strategy.

• Direct strategy for large, intricate projects and coordinate with product, claims, and actuarial teams.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in risk management, psychology, criminal justice, mathematics, finance, business, or a related discipline preferred.

• 5-12 years of relevant experience in underwriting.

• Comprehensive understanding of technical underwriting principles and risk evaluation.

• Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making abilities.

• Proven track record in managing and establishing broker and client relationships.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

• Demonstrated capability to manage complex risks with sound judgment.

• Highly self-motivated with exceptional attention to detail.

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately 50% of the time, with occasional movement throughout the office to access files and equipment.

• Ability to travel up to 30% or more as needed for client meetings, conferences, or industry events.
