Remotery

VP of Finance

Posted Jul 24

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the model, focusing on more than just the mathematics: Sustain and enhance a driver-based, forward-looking model that aligns with reality. Create scenarios (base/low/high), rigorously test assumptions, and convey “levers” into clear trade-offs for leadership.

• Immerse yourself in our unit economics: Monitor and enhance margins and P&Ls by location; intelligently group by cohort and segment (region, seasonality, property type, etc.); uncover insights and collaborate with the Operations team to boost contribution margin and simplify processes as we scale.

• Convert data into actionable insights: Develop user-friendly, dependable budget vs. actuals and KPI dashboards (cash, runway, sales productivity, marketing efficiency, portfolio performance) that leaders can utilize daily, not merely once a quarter.

• Enhance our finance infrastructure: Spearhead our shift from QuickBooks to a scalable ERP, collaborate with the in-house Accounting team to streamline the chart of accounts, expedite closing processes, and ensure accurate bookkeeping that integrates seamlessly with corporate.

• Cap table and equity management: Oversee Carta hygiene, option grants, refreshes, and board approvals in a precise, timely, organized, and market-informed manner.

• Readiness for investors and the board: Ensure we are “always ready” with consistent metrics definitions, an organized data room, and clear monthly/quarterly reporting. Guarantee that the narrative and the numbers are in harmony.

• Vendor expenditure and commercial precision: Identify significant cost areas, renegotiate where leverage exists, and standardize commercial terms to minimize one-off complexity. Collaborate with Sales & Operations to maintain scalable templates.

• Compensation and leveling: Work alongside leadership on compensation philosophy, leveling frameworks, annual reviews, and headcount planning that align with objectives and runway.

• Legal/G&A oversight: Manage commercial contract reviews, insurance matters, and office operations as required; efficiently engage external counsel and strive towards pragmatic in-house coverage over time.

• Capital strategy and banking: Maintain cash forecasts, assess debt options, nurture banking relationships, and prepare for audits as we expand.

• Create leverage for all: Develop simple ROI templates and decision frameworks enabling teams to prioritize projects, evaluate paybacks, and act swiftly without compromising financial discipline.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience building from the ground up: You have been the first or one of the earliest finance hires at a high-growth company and have personally established systems, closed the books, owned the model, and navigated a company through its initial audits.

• Hands-on operator: You feel comfortable switching between high-level strategy and granular details. You will actively resolve a mapping issue in the ERP at 10 AM and present a board-ready scenario by 2 PM.

• Modeling and judgment: A strong grasp of driver-based modeling, scenario analysis, and cohort economics paired with the discernment to simplify and focus on what drives the business.

• Systems and process architect: Experience transitioning from QuickBooks to ERP. You understand how to design a chart of accounts, shorten closing cycles, and ensure data reliability.

• Story and numbers: A clear communicator who can transform complexity into concise narratives for executives, the board, banks, and investors, ensuring alignment between the narrative and the data.

• Commercial and vendor insight: Comfortable reviewing terms, standardizing templates, and leading vendor negotiations that significantly enhance unit economics.

• Collaborative partnership: Experience in supporting compensation design, leveling, and workforce planning with a practical, operator-friendly approach.

• Proactive mindset: You act swiftly, measure outcomes, and refine the system with each cycle. You recognize when “80/20 and shipping” is better than “perfect and late.” Your philosophy is that Finance should not hinder company progress and exists to empower other leaders in the organization to make informed decisions quickly.

• Initiative-driven: You don’t wait for instructions — you identify gaps, develop the model, and present recommendations. The finance agenda is one you create, not one assigned to you.

• Strongly preferred: Experience in multi-location or revenue-sharing or transactional business settings, familiarity with hardware or inventory, prior responsibility for legal and G&A functions beyond “pure” finance, and experience preparing for and leading the company’s initial audits.
