VP, Medical Science – Strategy, Ophthalmology

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.

📋 Description

• Define and oversee the Ophthalmology portfolio strategy, translating market demands and client pipelines into key growth priorities, service differentiation, and investment decisions.

• Lead high-impact, strategic executive client engagements, governance forums, advisory boards, and bid defenses where enterprise-level influence is essential.

• Establish standards for medical and scientific quality across proposals, development plans, protocol strategies, regulatory positioning, and trial support; ensure consistency across teams and regions.

• Shape strategic partnerships and external thought leadership to enhance Thermo Fisher's clinical research business standing in the Ophthalmology sector.

• Collaborate with commercial, consulting, operations, regulatory, feasibility, and clinical leadership to translate scientific strategy into measurable revenue, win rates, quality, and delivery outcomes.

• Enhance organizational capability by mentoring physicians and scientists.

• Champion innovation and cross-functional initiatives that broaden offerings, improve decision quality, and reinforce the industry-leading position of the business.


⛳️ Requirements

• An Ophthalmologist with a minimum of 10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, supporting clinical development of at least one asset from discovery to registration.

• An active medical license is preferred, but not mandatory.

• Proven track record as a recognized therapeutic expert and peer to counterparts in the pharmaceutical industry's medical and scientific fields.

• Strong enterprise-level therapeutic strategy, portfolio judgment, and business acumen; capable of linking scientific decisions to commercial, operational, and growth results.

• Possess executive presence and credibility with senior medical, scientific, and business leaders in the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors.

• Capable of establishing standards, governance, and scalable operational methods across diverse geographies, functions, and client portfolios.

• Exceptional ability to influence in complex matrix environments, including interactions with senior cross-functional and external stakeholders.

• A strong talent developer who builds senior capabilities, succession plans, and communities of practice.

• Able to lead through ambiguity, manage significant risks, and make trade-off decisions that have enterprise-wide impact.

• Committed to driving innovation, continuous improvement, and market differentiation.

• Proficient in spoken and written English, with flexibility for domestic and international travel.
