• Take ownership of Loyal's controllership function, encompassing monthly close processes, CRO/CMO accrual reconciliation, technical accounting (ASC 606, 718, 842, 330; IRC §382; R&D tax credits), and managing audits from auditor selection to the delivery of signed opinions.
• Develop inventory and cost-of-goods tracking in preparation for commercial launch. Establish gross margin reporting and the financial infrastructure necessary for a revenue-generating operation.
• Enhance and enforce internal controls while promoting efficiency and sound judgment - document purchase order requirements, contract approval workflows, and segregation of duties for audit readiness.
• Oversee the financial model. Create and maintain an integrated P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow model across pipeline programs, milestone timelines, and capital deployment scenarios.
• Lead program valuation, including NPV, DCF, and rNPV modeling, and assist with portfolio prioritization, partnership discussions, and Board capital allocation reviews.
• Maintain a rolling cash runway model linked to program expenditures, headcount, and financing events. Monitor budget versus actuals at the departmental level; issue quarterly reforecasts with variance explanations.
• Assess and implement an FP&A platform that integrates with QBO and provides visibility at the department level.
• Own the quarterly board finance package, including standardized KPIs, variance analyses, and cash runway narratives, while providing regular financial updates to executive leadership and the board.
• Populate data rooms, respond to diligence requests from investors and lenders, and prepare financial packages for capital partners. Support venture debt facilities and future financing events.
• Collaborate with leadership on pre-board alignment, narrative framing, and capital strategy. Gradually take primary ownership of investor-facing finance communications.
• Build and manage workflows for contract processing, maintain a contract repository, and manage relationships with outside counsel. Oversee vendor management and compliance filings.
• Maintain the company's insurance portfolio - including D&O, clinical trial liability, and general coverage - reviewed annually and updated during financing events.
• Supervise the in-house finance and people team, as well as outsourced service providers. Ensure HR infrastructure complies with offer letters, onboarding, benefits, offboarding, and policy maintenance. Ensure accurate payroll processing across multiple states, with correct tracking of equity compensation.
• Lead the evaluation and migration of ERP systems when the company outgrows QBO.
• 10–15 years of progressive finance experience, with a minimum of 5 years in biotech, pharma, or life sciences, or another R&D-intensive business that creates value by achieving technical milestones.
• You possess low ego, high integrity, and communicate in a clear and concise manner.
• You actively pursue and embrace opportunities to leverage AI and automation tools to enhance financial processes and establish a cutting-edge, efficient finance infrastructure.
• You can present financial outcomes, variance narratives, and capital strategies clearly to a board audience. Your written and verbal communication is precise and to the point, translating model outputs into relevant decision-making narratives.
• You have experience managing people and building teams. You set clear expectations, hold individuals accountable, and foster talent development. You can manage both in-house staff and outsourced service providers without gaps in ownership.
• You work effectively across functions—with research and manufacturing stakeholders, program managers, and external advisors. You gain credibility by understanding the business, not just the numbers.
• You have knowledge of auditor requirements and how to prepare a team for fieldwork without disrupting daily operations.
• You operate with a high level of autonomy. You escalate issues appropriately, build sustainable systems and processes, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where the scope is broad, the team is lean, and the work is impactful.
