This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.
• Create and implement state-specific strategies to promote the organization’s legislative and programmatic objectives.
• Propel public policy priorities through direct advocacy efforts.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with agency officials, legislators, executives, and their staff.
• Oversee and guide policy reform throughout its various stages.
• Develop and engage a diverse coalition of stakeholders to support the strategic plan and public policy initiatives.
• Collaborate with program teams and internal stakeholders to formulate a state-specific strategy and execute the plan in Virginia.
• Advocate for public policy, defend against efforts to undermine animal protection laws, and address key issues.
• Act as a spokesperson for government officials, key stakeholders, and the media.
• Pursue media opportunities to further public policy objectives and enhance public awareness.
• Adhere to internal, local, and statewide lobbying regulations.
• Manage the state’s budget effectively.
• Regularly update and maintain social media platforms with information prioritized by the organization.
• Offer guidance, training, and support for local investigators and enforcement officials, providing hands-on help when necessary.
• Occasionally collaborate with the Humane World Action Fund on State PAC initiatives or political activities.
• Carry out other assigned tasks and responsibilities.
• Operate from a home office under the supervision of the Regional Director; travel extensively throughout Virginia with occasional travel outside the state.
• Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Government/Public Affairs, Communications/Media, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience is required.
• At least five (5) years of progressive experience in animal protection/advocacy or related fields is required.
• Legislative/lobbying experience is highly preferred.
• Experience in volunteer management is preferred.
• Grassroots advocacy and political campaigning experience is an advantage.
• Strong knowledge of and interest in the animal welfare movement is preferred.
• Comprehensive understanding of the legislative and political processes, especially at the state level.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects concurrently while being adaptable to changes in workload and assignments.
• Capacity to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders across various political, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; uphold organizational values pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines; highly energetic, self-motivated, and proactive.
• Excellent organizational abilities; adept at analyzing and resolving issues in advancing legislative strategy and providing effective solutions.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook); capable of adapting to new technological platforms introduced by the organization.
• Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, evidenced by delivering quality and timely results.
• Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member within a team environment.
• Must reside within a one-hour commute from Richmond, Virginia.
