• Direct the long-term financial strategy and planning of the organization.
• Take ownership of multi-year financial models, scenario planning, and the capital allocation strategy.
• Convert the company vision into financial objectives and actionable plans.
• Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Revenue Officer, and the executive team on significant strategic choices including pricing, growth investments, and market expansion.
• Deliver data-driven insights and ROI analyses to inform resource allocation decisions.
• Supervise budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis with an emphasis on business drivers.
• Work alongside leadership to formulate and implement financial strategies that align with the organization's overarching goals and objectives.
• Examine financial data to generate insights regarding the company’s financial health, trends, and potential areas of concern.
• Present financial reports to leadership, the Board of Directors, and external stakeholders as necessary.
• Guide the organization through the annual audit and any other required state or federal filings.
• Manage daily accounting operations and oversee the functions of accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
• Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and organizational policies.
• Offer guidance, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to team members.
• Master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related area; CPA designation is strongly preferred.
• A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, including at least 5+ years supervising finance staff.
• Preferred experience in building, managing, and expanding a finance function for a growth-stage organization.
• Experience in leading financial operations and strategy within an organization with an annual budget of $25-$50 million is preferred.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulations (GAAP).
• Expertise in financial and accounting software, reporting systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other leading business intelligence/reporting tools.
• Proven leadership skills and organizational abilities, demonstrating maturity, dependability, integrity, and initiative.
• Strong analytical and data analysis capabilities, with the ability to manage large volumes of data for generating reports to aid decision-making at the company level.
• Exceptional management skills, capable of leading multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
• Strong abilities in team building, mentorship, delegation, skill enhancement, and career development.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, along with presentation skills that enable the synthesis of complex issues while maintaining professionalism when representing CommonLit to external partners.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
