Underwriting Counsel – Indiana, Kentucky

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kentucky.

📋 Description

• Provides underwriting assistance and authorization to company staff, agents, and customers in relation to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies.

• Applies underwriting standards and guidelines within assigned authority limits to underwrite the issuance of title insurance.

• Offers guidance to company personnel in executing real estate settlement services.

• Issues underwriting standards and guidelines in alignment with established company processes.

• Reviews title orders according to company standards to assess the conditions of the title and its insurability, considering documents such as deeds, deeds of trust, mechanics liens, tax liens, judgments, assessments, probates, and other recorded matters.

• Investigates relevant title plant software, analyzes and evaluates significant record documents to determine ownership, legal descriptions, and any connections to the title.

• Clarifies chain of title, exceptions, and requirements to customers and managers.

• Identifies title defects and develops curative solutions.

• Evaluates risks and liabilities that could jeopardize the company and brings such issues to the attention of the local title manager, state title manager, or underwriter, as appropriate.

• Maintains consistent production levels and delivery standards on a daily basis.

• Reviews surveys conducted on properties, when applicable.

• Collaborates closely with the customer and escrow staff to meet timeline requirements for options and assists in addressing inquiries.

• Prepares an accurate and comprehensive title commitment in accordance with company examination and policy procedures.

• Performs additional duties as assigned by the manager.


⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in title underwriting.

• Must possess knowledge of real estate law.

• Strong understanding of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of the real estate title and settlement process.

• General knowledge of federal and state regulations concerning real estate title insurance and settlement services.

• Basic understanding of underwriting real estate transactions for issuing title insurance policies.

• Ability to collaborate effectively and make decisive actions.

• Detail-oriented.

• Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication abilities.

• Strong organizational skills with the capacity to multi-task, prioritize, and follow up in a timely manner.

• Proficient negotiation skills.

• Requires abstract thinking and the ability to devise creative solutions.
